Catch up Tuesday
Yesterday was a day off for administrative offices, so today we’ll share some catch up news.
I was talking with some upperclass (i.e., not first year) students last week, and one of the common themes they were sharing is that they are adjusting to being back in the classroom face-to-face. How you participate in class, how you prep for class, how you focus your attention is very different in a face-to-face setting versus the virtual environment. So to some extent or other, students are having to adjust to what in-person class feels like. Thankfully, we have free resources to help via the Learning Assistance Center and Disability Services:
“Announcing OWLS (Outreach Workshop Learning Series), sponsored by the Learning Assistance Center-Disability Services: OWLS is a series of workshops focused on a variety of learning topics. OWLS events will be offered in-person and virtual and will bring students a monthly opportunity to learn about topics such as study strategies, test anxiety, ADHD, and more. Students can join us for one, some, or all of these great 30-45 minutes workshops – fun, candy, and swag are always a part of OWLS!
The September OWLS event is titled “We’re Back in the Classroom… Now What? Helpful strategies for a successful return to in-person learning!” All students who attend will get a free t-shirt – what fun! See the flyer below.”
A couple of notes for our P’25s: your students got their copy of Letters So Dear yesterday, and we also published a new Weekly Message for First Year Families. The weekly message is entitled The Frantic Phone Call/Text/FaceTime, and it is applicable to families of all years, though certainly may be more prevalent among newer students.
Your Deacs looking for something to do tonight? Student Union features Tuesday Trivia each Tuesday at 7:00 pm in Shorty’s, Benson Center. Students can win a $50 Amazon gift card and show off all the random facts they know. Students can learn more about this – and other! – events on the Corq app.
The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent out their annual fire safety reminders about a week ago (and I forgot to mention here). Read them here.
If you are looking for a poignant, bittersweet read on parenting and letting go, the New York Times ran a great opinion piece entitled How to Let Go of Your Irreplaceable, Unstoppable Daughter. I’m not sure how old Class of ’27 was when I had this ironic epiphany that my husband and I don’t own our child, we’re just leasing him until he’s 18 (or maybe 22 when he graduates), and then he will belong to the world. Anyway, this article resonated with me.
For all our families who are observing Rosh Hashanah, we wish you Shana Tova – may you have a sweet new year filled with health, happiness, and peace.
