We had some big news yesterday: the University will establish the Maya Angelou Artist-in-Residence Award. Here is an excerpt, or you can read the full story here.

The new award will honor world-renowned artists who reflect Maya Angelou’s passions for creating, performing and teaching. The award will celebrate exceptional artists for combining achievement in the arts and a commitment to improving the human condition.

“The significance and beauty of this award is that it honors the life and life’s work of my Mother while inspiring artists who have demonstrated a powerful commitment to uplifting humanity through exercising virtues she lived by: courage, creativity, hope, tolerance and social activism.” Guy Johnson, Dr. Angelou’s son

While housing selection for current students won’t take place for a while still, Residence Life and Housing sent a message yesterday about the process, as well as tools to help students find roommates and form roommate groups. Here’s the Bottom Line Up Front:

A variety of event and tools are available for students as you form roommate groups! Visit wfu.edu/roommate to learn more.

Information sessions on Housing Selection will be available on April 15, 21, and 27. Registration is required, see links [in the message].

Events to meet other students will take place on April 15, 21 and 29. See details [in the message].

All students will receive an invite to RoomSync – an app designed to help you interact with other Wake students also looking for roommates and/or to form roommate groups.

Undergraduate students should receive a message sometime today about how to order their two Commencement tickets. I can’t post a link to it because there are different versions based on which diploma ceremony they are scheduled for, but if you have a ’21 Deac, ask them to check their email. Students must use their wfu.edu email to access the registration (i.e., families cannot register for the tickets themselves). Graduate and professional school students will hear directly from their school or program about ticket ordering (if not today, it should be very soon).

There is always so much going on at Wake – hard to choose which opportunities to take part in. But there is an upcoming  Wake Washington event that is open to parents and families on May 4th that I want to mention. This will be a conversation with Life Trustee and journalist Al Hunt (’65,P’11) and Wake Forest parent and political columnist for The Washington Post, Karen Tumulty (P’14, ’19) on her new book, The Triumph of Nancy Reagan. This fascinating book is being touted as the definitive biography of the fiercely vigilant and politically astute First Lady who shaped one of the most consequential presidencies of the 20th century. I was fortunate to get to know Karen during her time as a Wake Forest mom and she is such a terrific person, so I can’t wait to attend. Details and registration are here.
