Big news Monday
Lots of big athletics news today. Our Men’s Soccer team is headed to Cary, NC to play in the College Cup. If you’re in the Raleigh area, or you just love our team, please buy tickets and come out and support our guys. We need a big crowd for the Friday game to help launch us to the finals on Sunday.
Also, Wake is GOING BOWLING! Our Demon Deacs will play Michigan State of the Big 10 in the 10th annual New Era Pinstripe Bowl in New York City. Gametime is 3:20 pm on Friday, December 27th. Even better, the bowl is being held in one of the most iconic venues in the world, Yankee Stadium! Our Bowl Central website has all the details about tickets.
The Wake Forest Pre-Game Party will be held at Billy’s Sports Bar, across the street from Yankee Stadium. Ticket includes full lunch menu, drink tickets for guests 21 and over, soft drinks, water, entertainment, games, and official Wake Forest “swag” to get ready to cheer on the Deacs in the 2019 New Era Pinstripe Bowl! Advance, online registration will close at noon EST on December 26, so be sure to secure your spot soon. Wake Forest was able to secure the largest, indoor pre-game party space right across the street from Yankee Stadium. Enjoy the festive Demon Deacon atmosphere at this private, pre-game party in a space that can hold more than 1,500 Wake Forest fans! If you are in the area, please make plans to take your family to the bowl. It will be HUGE fun. And if you can’t attend, you can purchase tickets and donate them.
Finals start today, so this means we’ll start seeing a lot of beard stubble, ponytails, yoga pants or sweatpants, hats, and little of the normal makeup/careful grooming in our students. Finals time is crunch time, and you have to dispense with the regular niceties and get down to the grind. Throughout finals week, I am going to share some of the best finals memes I can find. As longtime Daily Deac-ers know, I am a fan of the mantra ‘laughter is the best medicine.’ Hopefully this will bring you (or your Deacs) a chuckle.
Several parents and families have asked about airport transportation. Here are some details:
Wake Forest Transportation and Parking Services offers airport shuttle transportation during designated break times throughout the school year. Service is provided both to and from Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO-PTI) and Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport(CLT). Visit our website for more information and to register for Winter Break.
The Benson University Center provides convenient, reliable and safe airport transportation to the Greensboro and Charlotte airports by contract with Black Tie Transportation, a local, family-owned business. For more information, parents or students may contact the Benson Ticket Office at 336-758-4265. ABC Door 2 Door Transportation also provides local car service and transportation to regional airports. Contact ABC Door 2 Door Transportation for more information or a quote at 336.721.9921/336.473.3892 or tadesse@abcdoor2door.com.
Many of our students also use Uber to get to the airport. They will talk to friends leaving from the same airport (and around the same time) and will split the cost of an Uber. So that is an option as well.
Some have asked why we don’t have a ridesharing app or electronic ride board for students. While parents and families definitely see the value/need for these kinds of tools and platforms, this has been a very tough nut to crack re: student behavior. Our Office of Sustainability has tried promoting numerous ridematching platforms, but there has not been any real traction in terms of student use. They even had a WF entrepreneurship student who created a platform just for Wake Forest students – tailored to their needs (and well marketed) – but Wake students did not use it. Students say they do not want to ride with people they don’t know, or they have a student organization with their own Google doc for rideseeking, etc. Please know it’s not for lack of trying on this one. You can lead a horse to water…
Phew – busy news day. As promised, we will close with finals funnies.
