We had a great Homecoming weekend on campus, Deac families.  The weather was sunny and gorgeous, we had a very competitive game against Army and we won in a high-scoring, nail-biting finish.  It turned cooler overnight on Sunday and this morning your students are waking up to temperatures in the high 40s.  It’s now sweatshirt and jacket time, at least for this morning and tomorrow; it will be in the low 80s midweek.

As we look ahead toward Family Weekend, there’s one big event taking place tomorrow night.  At 6 pm on Tuesday in Wait Chapel, Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson will be speaking as part of our Voices of Our Time lecture series.  They will be speaking on “American Debt and Deficit Crisis: Issues and Solutions.”

From the Voices of Our Time website: “Simpson and Bowles were appointed by President Obama in 2010 to co-chair the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, a bipartisan group looking to erase the United States’ multitrillion-dollar debt. Simpson served in the United States Senate from 1978 until 1997 and later was a Visiting Lecturer and Director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Bowles joined the Clinton administration to run the Small Business Administration and eventually became President Clinton’s Chief of Staff. From 2005 until 2011, he served as President of the University of North Carolina system.”

Please do encourage your students to attend this lecture.  No matter which side of the aisle they sit on – or if they are an independent or third-party voter – they ought to go to hear more about the various perspectives on debt and what it means to the US.  And by the way, this event is free and open to the public, so if you are nearby and want to attend, please come join us.
