July 3 Email to New Students from the Office of Academic Advising

Dean Christy Buchanan of the Office of Academic Advising sent the following message to all new incoming students on July 3.  Students should refer to their email to see the attachments.

Dear New WFU Student,

This email is to give you some information that I hope will be helpful in your Round I Registration (which begins Monday!).

• If you have not done so already, you can find your registration time for Round I by logging into WIN, clicking on Virtual Campus, and then “Check Your Holds & Registration Status”.
  

• Detailed instructions for registering are in your Forestry 101 book (pp. 81-102) and on newstudents.wfu.edu under the Registration tab.
  

• As you plan for registration and during the registration process, please remember that you can turn to us for help!  As indicated in Forestry 101 and on our web site, student advisers will be holding chat sessions on July 7, 6-10 pm and July 8-11, 6-8 pm.  Add “askanSA” to your WFU Google Chat contact list. You can also email undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu (for a professional academic counselor) or askanSA@wfu.edu (for a student adviser).  On Friday 7/5 and Monday-Friday next week, the Office of Academic Advising is open 8:30-5 and can be reached by calling 336-758-3320.

• Pre-health students:  be reminded of the course advice for your first semester at http://college.wfu.edu/prehealth/pre-health-professions/courses-for-pre-health-profession-students/first-year-students/what-should-i-take-in-the-fall-semester-of-my-first-year.  If you are wondering about Chemistry choices — and whether you should start with CHM 111 or will be invited to take CHM 123 — please see the attached document from the Chemistry department.  Because many AP scores are still unknown, letters of invitation for CHM 123 might not arrive before you have to register, so follow the advice in this document.

• Many of you have asked about HES electives:  please be aware that you must complete HES 100 and 101/112 before enrollment in additional HES elective (e.g., tennis, golf).

• For students interested in the STEM Incubator course (CSC 193): please note that there are six different sections (with different topics).  You need to contact the instructor whose email is listed with the course description online (http://cs.wfu.edu/stem) indicating your interest in this course.  The administrator in the Computer Science department will register students approved for the course.

• Both of the “learning community” classes (described in earlier emails) still have a few spaces that will be available to students in Round I.  (If you applied earlier, you have already been  registered and you will have an additional 8 hours available starting on Monday).  However, please be aware that the FYS is for women only, and the Philosophy-Biology linked course is not the best choice for pre-med students or potential Biology majors. See the attached documents and earlier emails for details about these very exciting course opportunities!
