Wake Alternative Break

The Volunteer Service Corps e-newsletter included an item about applying for Wake Alternative Break, which provides students with service opportunities over Spring Break.  The deadline to apply to Wake Alternative Break is this Friday, January 24.

If your student is interested, he or she must log into the Org Sync website, where the information is located (note: students must log in with their Wake ID and password). A description of the Wake Alternative Break trips (as listed in the Org Sync website) is below.

1. Campus Kitchen Food Insecurity: Students will travel to Washington, DC to work with DC Central Kitchen and learn more about food insecurity and how the organization addresses it and systemic homelessness in the District.  You can learn more about the DCCK by visiting their website at www.dccentralkitchen.org. David Hale and Brittany Forniotis will be serving as leaders.

2. Chicago Urban Hispanic Outreach: Students will learn about the needs of and services for recent immigrants and Hispanic residents in an Urban setting by volunteering at Casa Central in Chicago. The group will mainly be working with children and youth but some other service is possible as well.

3. Environmental Conservation in Knoxville, TN:Students will serve with two Americorps projects in Knoxville focused on waste reduction and environmental conservation.  They will be hosted by recent Wake Forest alums serving as Americorps members, Denoia Woods and Laura Coats.

4. Everglades Conservation Trip: Students will stay at the Everglades Hostel and do conservation work at two national parks and a sea turtle habitat. Because of the distance to this trip, a staff adviser will accompany the group.

5. Health Outreach in Baltimore:  Students will serve with health clinics in Baltimore that address health disparities affecting at-risk populations.  This trip was developed by Rachel Tay and she will be serving as one of the leaders.

6. Literacy Staycation: Students interested in staying in Winston-Salem over Spring Break can serve in collaboration with the ZSR Library on this staycation WAB trip!  The trip’s cost is much reduced, $100, and students will serve with El Buen Pastor and other community partners working to advance literacy in Winston-Salem.  In the evenings students will have access to special locations on campus and exciting opportunities in the community.

7. New Orleans Rebuilding Together Trip: Students will continue to work in communities still damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Rebuilding Together is one of the most consistent agencies active in New Orleans before, during, and after the storm.

8. New Orleans Education and Food Security: Students will serve with Blair Grocery, an alternative school and 10 acre urban farm in the Lower Ninth Ward.  They will work with the farm and help lead social justice education programs. 9. Virginia State Parks Conservation: Students will serve in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley with the Virginia State Parks service combating invasive species, performing trail restoration, and exploring the beautiful mountains.

10. Youth Empowerment in Nashville, TN: Students will serve with a variety of organizations serving youth with a diversity of needs including the Ronald McDonald House and youth with special needs. Leaders for this trip have already been selected as it was developed by Sarah Fine and Alexa Erb.
