The following message was sent to the campus community on Monday, August 24.

The following message is sent on behalf of University Police Chief Regina Lawson:

Early this morning, thanks largely to an alert student, University Police Department officers apprehended an escaped inmate on campus.  That inmate has been returned to the Winston-Salem prison where he escaped.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety notified local news media of the inmate’s capture.  Briefly, here’s what happened.

A student called the University Police Department at 1:52 a.m. today to report a suspicious man next to student vehicles at a University parking area along Polo Road.  At the same time, a University security officer also spotted the man and called for University police officers to investigate.

In minutes, University police officers found the man hiding outside the Polo Road campus entrance, took him into custody and determined he was an escapee.  Our officers immediately turned him over to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Today’s incident was a good example of our community working together to address a security matter.  The University Police Department appreciates the community’s support and assistance.

Regina Lawson, Chief
University Police Department
