You are cordially invited to join us for the Universities Studying Slavery Spring Symposium, March 30 – April 2, 2022, in Greensboro and Winston-Salem hosted by Guilford College and Wake Forest University. 

March 31st will be held in Greensboro and April 1st will be in Winston-Salem. The conference will feature tours of historic sites in the region including Old Salem’s Hidden Town ProjectSalem College and AcademyBlandwood’s Thomas Day Exhibit, the International Civil Rights Museum, and the Black is Beautiful exhibit at Reynolda House Museum Of American Art. We anticipate this will primarily be an in-person gathering with some hybrid and virtual events, however, the COVID-19 landscape will be monitored with changes made accordingly. Please refer to current institution policiesGuilford College – Wake Forest University.

Anticipated themes include:

  • In what ways are local communities partnering with public and historic sites?
  • New methods for teaching hard histories
  • Universities engaging communities around slavery
  • The legacy of slavery and the politics of philanthropy
