The following message was sent to the campus community from President Hatch on Monday afternoon, June 10th.

Dear Wake Forest Community,

I am saddened to announce that Michael Montoya, one of our graduate students, died June 7 in Winston-Salem.  He was a student in the Master of Arts program in mathematics.  Michael received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics at Wake Forest in 2011.  He spent a year as a Wake Forest School of Medicine student before joining the Graduate School program.

We grieve the loss of Michael and extend our condolences to his family and fellow students, as well as faculty and staff who had the opportunity to know Michael during his time here. The death of a student is a loss for the entire Wake Forest community.

May Michael’s family find comfort and support as they endure the painful but necessary things that must be done in the days ahead.  We will remember Michael and appreciate the time we enjoyed with him.

The University will share information on services arranged by Michael’s family when that information is available.

Each of us is affected by loss in different ways.  Wake Forest offers support and counseling services for all students, faculty and staff.  The Counseling Center may be reached at 758-5273, the Office of the Chaplain at 758-5210.  For faculty and staff, there is also the Employee Assistance Program at 716-5493.  Please do not hesitate to call these offices.

Sincerely,

Nathan O. Hatch

President
