The following message was sent Tuesday afternoon to students, faculty and staff from President Nathan O. Hatch regarding the tragedy in Japan.  Full text of the email is below.

——————————————-

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

In the midst of a terrible unfolding tragedy, Wake Forest stands in solidarity with the people of Japan and those around the Pacific Rim who were affected by subsequent tsunami waves following the earthquake on Friday, March 11. We have all been stunned by the images of loss and tragedy, and we extend our sympathy to those who have suffered so profoundly.

We are pleased to report that all members of the Wake Forest community in Japan at the time of the earthquake have been accounted for and remain safe, to the best of our knowledge. If you have family or friends who were affected by this sequence of natural disasters, please use the links on the Wake Forest Outreach website to contact the Counseling Center, or contact my office so that we can be aware of the connections to the University.

Ours is a compassionate community, and we have already received a number of inquiries regarding ways to assist those coping with tragedy and the threat of further loss. We have listed contact and donation information for the American Red Cross. Closer to home, the Chaplains Emergency Fund helps students who are in crisis. Links for both are available on the Outreach website.

Thank you for joining me as we direct our thoughts and prayers to those whose lives have been ripped apart in this horrible event and as we pray for recovery throughout the stricken regions.

Nathan O. Hatch
President
