The following message was sent to the campus community from President Nathan O. Hatch.

——————-

Dear Wake Forest students, faculty and staff,

Dr. Maya Angelou’s family has arranged a private memorial service in Wait Chapel on Saturday, June 7 at 10 a.m.

We are honored that people will gather here to say their farewells and pay their respects to our beloved teacher who made her home in Winston-Salem and discovered her passion for teaching at Wake Forest University.

Because the family has decided to have a closed service primarily for family and friends of Dr. Angelou, access to campus will be limited on Saturday. The Office of Communications and External Relations will provide additional traffic and parking information later this week.

Wake Forest will broadcast the service live at go.wfu.edu/angeloumemorial.

I hope you have had the opportunity to visit our remembrance site at mayaangelou.wfu.edu, where you may share memories or condolences.

As we reflect upon Dr. Angelou’s legacy, let us remember her words, “I’m not a writer who teaches. I’m a teacher who writes. But I had to work at Wake Forest to know that.”

Sincerely,

Nathan O. Hatch
President
