The following message was sent on 2/24/20 to all students currently studying abroad in Europe

Dear WFU students currently studying abroad in Europe,

Following recent reports of a number of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Italy’s Lombardy (i.e. Milan area) and Veneto region (i.e. Venice area), we are writing to share with you this important update. The two aforementioned regions have imposed travel restrictions (until at least March 1). These restrictions include the following:

  • Closure of museums and other cultural sites
  • Suspension of demonstrations or gatherings of any type (including cultural, sporting, recreational, or religious events)
  • Closure of all schools at all levels and suspension of classes and school activities, including professional and university courses, with the exception of distance learning classes and medical or healthcare training
  • Suspension of educational trips within Italy or abroad

With this in mind, students currently studying in Europe (i.e. outside of Italy) are advised to avoid travel to Italy, specifically northern Italy, in compliance with these recent government restrictions. While there are currently no restrictions on flights in or out of Italy, there is the possibility for health screenings, travel delays, and/or cancellations in the coming days. Per your program guidelines, you are also reminded to submit plans for any independent travel so that local program staff know where you are and can assist in the event of an emergency.

Likewise, all students are reminded to practice good hygiene during this cold and flu season to help protect yourself from the unlikely possibility of infection. Recommendations include the following:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • When coughing and sneezing, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or flexed elbow
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • If you experience any flu-like symptoms, please contact your on-site staff immediately and schedule an appointment with a local medical provider.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or your local in-country staff.

All best,

Dean Taylor
