This afternoon, a rabid raccoon was shot outside Worrell Professional Center after attacking a Wake Forest security officer. The officer was not hurt, and he called a deputy of the Animal Control division of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s office, who killed the raccoon.

No other attacks were reported, but anyone on campus should be on the lookout for rabid racoons. Signs that the animal may be rabid include: staggering gait; seemingly oblivious to noise or nearby movement; erratic wandering; discharge from eyes or mouth; wet and matted hair on face; repeated high-pitched vocalization; and self-mutilation.

If you see a rabid animal, please call the University Police at (336) 758-5911.
