Campus Raises $26,782 at Hit the Bricks
In what will be known as the University’s most successful Hit the Bricks event to date, Hearn Plaza (the Quad) was a flurry of activity on Thursday, October 6th, 2011. Over 900 participants circled the Quad, walking and running on the brick pavers to raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer. A record setting eighty-nine separate teams of students, faculty, and staff each competed in a “relay race” from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to complete the most laps and raise the most money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive. Since 2003, the annual Hit The Bricks fundraiser has raised a total of $140,944 to support cancer research.
Lambda Chi Alpha was the winner for the most number of laps (616). Alpha Sigma Phi raised the most money among the fraternities. Alpha Delta Pi completed the most laps (518). Tri Delta raised the most money among the sororities. Wombuckus completed the most laps (579) and the Anthony Aston Players team raised the most money in the Open division. BB Luters completed the most laps (582) and also raised the most money in the First-year student division. For the Faculty/Staff division, the Crusaders team finished first in total laps (513) and the Dean’s Demons team raised the most money.
Throughout the Hit the Bricks for Brian competition, a total of 25,571 laps around the Quad were completed and a total of $26,782 was raised by all of the participants including the proceeds from the luminaries and raffle drawing. However, the big winner of the day was the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive which was able to raise $26,782 to help in the fight against cancer.
Now in its thirty-first year, the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive has raised over $1.2 million for the research and treatment of cancer through the Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center and serves as one of the University’s shining examples of its motto, “pro humanitate”, meaning for the good of humanity. Hit the Bricks has for nine years reflected the University’s emphasis on the importance of values, ideals, and human service experiences.
