Additional Information Regarding Investigation of Campus Assaults
Following assault reports by two students early today, the University Police Department is beginning immediately to increase patrols of the campus and the immediate area around campus. In addition, the Winston-Salem Police Department is intensifying patrolling of the neighborhood around campus.
Meanwhile, shuttle service hours are being expanded tonight to provide additional opportunities for students to ride the shuttle instead of walking. The Gray Line evening schedule is expanded so that the last loop on and around campus will end at 4:55 a.m. daily. The expanded shuttle schedule is effective through Sunday, May 3, but may be expanded beyond that date.
The University Police Department is investigating the two assaults that occurred in the early morning hours in the same general area of campus today.
One student reported at 3:19 a.m. that he was knocked to the ground, punched and kicked by an unidentified group of men he encountered about an hour earlier near Farrell Hall and North Campus Dining Hall on the driveway leading to Lot Q. They took his phone and warned him not to alert police before walking away from the area.
A person of interest in the assault and robbery is described as a man with dark skin wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans. He is also described as having shoulder-length braids and gold caps on his teeth.
The second student reported at 4:47 a.m. that he was knocked to the ground when punched by an unidentified man who was with a group of men and women at about 3 a.m. The student came across the group as he walked along a sidewalk on Wingate Road just south of Pascal Drive.
A person of interest in the second assault is described as a man with very dark skin wearing a black sweatshirt and black shorts. He was described as six feet tall, 170 pounds, with short, slightly shaven hair.
Both students had just walked onto campus minutes earlier from the Polo Road gate area.
The first student was taken to Student Health Service for treatment, while the other declined treatment. Injuries were minor in each incident.
