It’s a busy week here: Hit the Bricks on Thursday and then Family Weekend begins Friday. So today will be brief.

WF sophomore’s article in Sports Illustrated

One of my colleagues shared this message with me: “Written by a Wake Forest sophomore, this piece in Sports Illustrated is awesome.”

And my colleague is right. This article was written by Blake Robison (’29) and it captures the joy and ebullience of a Division I football game on a beautiful Saturday in the fall, rolling the Quad. Here is a snippet:

“‘It just means more.’

Sure, the SEC has coined that phrase as its slogan. Sure, the environments of SEC showdowns are unmatched. But in Winston-Salem, it really does just mean more.…

That’s the joy of Wake Forest. We’re the smallest Power Four school in the country, yet we can get No. 5 Miami against the ropes and take down red-hot No. 16 Louisville on the road. No one expects it, except us. And when it happens, we revel in the glory, romanticizing the what-could-be.

This is likely to end, as all things must. Maybe our dreams of 11–1 survive another week; maybe they don’t. That’s college football.”

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Getting ready for Hit the Bricks (this Thursday)

We are two days away from Hit the Bricks, one of the most fun days on campus all year. Teams of students, faculty, and staff will walk (me) or run (your students, and my fitter colleagues) on the Quad all day in honor of Brian Piccolo, our former football star (and whose story was told in the classic film Brian’s Song). Hit the Bricks benefits the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund, and the HTB leadership team has this great video from an alumnus who is now a physician, who tells the story of why Hit the Bricks is so impactful.

The forecast (as of this morning) is for partly cloudy Thursday morning, giving way to mainly sunny skies in the afternoon, with a high of 86. So for any Deacs who will be doing HTB, be sure to pre-hydrate and have plenty of liquids while you run/walk.

Zotero: the ultimate tool for citations

Midsemester tends to be a time when there are a lot of papers due, and I am not one to gatekeep, so I want to make sure our students know about Zotero, a tool that saved my bacon when I was doing my dissertation. It helps you save citations, format your Reference section in papers, and more.

The ZSR Library offers free Zotero workshops:

“Zotero is a powerful (and free!) tool for saving, organizing, and citing research sources. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to install Zotero, how to use it to build your own library of sources, and save yourself time when writing research papers. This hands-on session is oriented toward first-time users of Zotero. No familiarity with Zotero is required. Participants should bring their own Mac or Windows laptop (Chrome browser required).

Register for a workshop here!“

I can’t stress enough how easy Zotero made my academic writing process. Hope our Deacs tap into it as well.

More to come tomorrow, Daily Deacdom!
