Today looks and feels lot more like fall: grey skies, cooler temps (only 75!) and a light breeze. There is a chance of rain later in the day. We’re now getting to the time of year where students would be well advised to check their weather app of choice before heading out the door to classes, because NC has a funny way of sometimes being hot one day, cold the next. So it’s best to be prepared.

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement (OCCE) has some upcoming events and activities that I hope will interest some of your students (or you, student readers!)
BridgeUSA Interest Meeting
September 23, 6-7 p.m., Campus Kitchen Lounge
Are you interested in politics, current events, and meaningful discussion? BridgeUSA is coming to Wake Forest! BridgeUSA is a student-led organization dedicated to bridging political divides and promoting healthy, respectful discourse across all political viewpoints.
Come to learn about upcoming events, leadership opportunities, and how you can get involved. Everyone is welcome, regardless of political background, major, or year.

Kids’ Cooking Coalition
Interest Meeting Monday October 19, application due Tuesday, October 20
The Kids’ Cooking Coalition (KCC) brings children and Wake Forest students together to explore cooking, nutrition, and healthy eating in fun and hands-on ways.
Each year, we facilitate a six-week KCC program at various community sites across Winston-Salem.
For Wake Forest students, KCC is an opportunity to build relationships with local children while gaining experience in mentorship, nutrition education, and community engagement. For participating children, it’s a chance to get creative, try new foods, build skills, and discover the joy of cooking.

Project Pumpkin
October 27, 3-6 p.m.
Project Pumpkin is a signature Wake Forest philanthropy event that brings together both the campus and Winston-Salem communities. We are student-led and one of the oldest campus traditions, established in 1989.
We partner with local schools and agencies to bring over 500 children to campus and to create a fall festival with 70+ student organization booths that include trick-or-treating, entertainment, and educational activities. In addition, we raise money to benefit the WFU Freedom School.
Student Volunteer Interest Form: Training dates will be announced soon. All volunteers must attend one session. Note: Booth Registration Coming Soon!

Halloween Care Packages
Residence Life and Housing has an upcoming opportunity for our families: send your Deac a little Halloween spirit from home! Surprise your student with a Halloween Care Package filled with festive snacks and goodies. It’s the perfect way to brighten their day, provide a study break, and remind them you’re thinking of them. The deadline to order is October 10.
‘Don’t shoot. Listen’: The AI-aided quest to understand Yellowstone’s wolves
I saw this yesterday in a Wake-in-the-news media roundup. If you have ever been to Yellowstone and had the good fortune to see a wolf in nature, this article is for you. It is by Justin Catanoso, professor of journalism here at Wake. Here is a taste:
“Wolf howls have mystified listeners for ages, prompting a range of questions. For more than three decades, wildlife biologists, using traditional research methods, have sought answers from the wolf packs of Yellowstone National Park, among the most studied on Earth,” writes journalism professor Justin Catanoso, a regular contributor to Mongabay.
