It’s a beautiful sunny day here – or in the words of our late and much beloved former basketball coach, Skip Prosser, it’s a beautiful day in the Forest of Wake. And there are a ton of things going on – Career Fair is today, Face to Face is tonight.
My students also tell me there are a lot of tests this week, so our students might need some fun things to look forward to. So today I am sharing just a few of the upcoming opportunities.
Face to Face with Cynthia Erivo is tonight
Tonight at 7:30 our Face to Face speaker series is hosting Cynthia Erivo, an Emmy, Grammy and Tony award winner and three-time Oscar Nominee. Hopefully your students have already claimed their tickets.
WFU campus shuttle buses will be available to students & staff, located in Lot P, with trips to the event from 5:45-7:45 p.m. and trips back to campus between 8:40-9:45 p.m. Parking passes are $20 and can be acquired on a drive-up basis.
Cynthia Erivo is a legendary talent – just one ‘O’ away from the EGOT. There is no doubt she will get the EGOT in due time.
Former Secretary of the Army to speak at the Business School
I happened to see this on our Events Calendar and it promises to give students an insider’s view of strategic leadership:
“Once responsible for overseeing the operations, modernization, and resources for nearly one million American soldiers and over 265,000 Army Civilians, the Honorable Daniel Driscoll knows what it takes to lead through complex, high-stakes situations. The Former Secretary of the Army will expound upon his experiences on September 18th at 2:00 p.m. in Farrell Hall’s Broyhill Auditorium.
The event, titled ‘Conversations in Strategic Leadership,’ is free and open to the entire Wake Forest community, including WFU ROTC cadets and the WFU Veterans group. The discussion moderated by Professor Ben King will also feature an audience Q&A session.”
Access to these sorts of speakers is something students would have to pay for after college – so I hope many of them take advantage of these experts while they can.
Drone show at Friday’s football game
This breaking news hit my inbox midday:
“This Friday night, the action won’t stop when the first half ends.
As Wake Forest takes on No. 5 Miami under the lights, fans will be treated to a special drone show at halftime, illuminating the sky above Allegacy Financial Stadium with a one-of-a-kind display.”
Deacs and Deac fans, you’ll want to wear black to the game, which is a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Secrest Artists Series: Isidore String Quartet and Sterling Elliott (September 24 at 7:30 pm, Brendle Recital Hall)
As if Cynthia Erivo was not enough, we have another fantastic (and free!) artistic opportunity for our campus community next Thursday. The Secrest Artists Series will open its 2026-27 concert season with a collaboration featuring the Isidore String Quartet and cellist Sterling Elliott:

Their concert at Wake Forest University will feature:

Tickets are free for WFU students, faculty, staff, and retirees. Please reserve tickets in advance. Parents and families, you can of course purchase tickets to the Secrest Artists Series events too.
