Every summer, I like to share the Tips for a Sustainable Move-In from our Office of Sustainability. While I was looking for that, I found some other items that may be of interest to the Daily Deacdom. As always, read what serves you and skim past what doesn’t 🙂
Tips for a sustainable move-in
The graphic below is a great start for students of all years to think about how they prepare to pack for the fall semester (click to enlarge).
The other major tip I have for students is do not overpack. When I was preparing to go abroad for a semester during my Wake student days, our professor gave us the best possible packing advice: lay out the bare minimum you think you will need for the semester, and then pack half of that. He was not wrong.
For ’30 students – apply to the Sustainability Leadership Group (SLG)
Applications for SLG ‘30, the Sustainability Leadership Group for the Class of 2030, are now open! Now in its eighth year, SLG’s mission is to develop a select group of first-year students into impactful leaders who work together to spread a culture of sustainability throughout the first-year class at Wake Forest and beyond. This mission is achieved through three pillars: leadership development, education, and community building. Learn more.
Fall Sustainability events
SLG ‘30 isn’t the only way to get involved in sustainability at Wake. To meet us and learn about Sustainability Ambassadors, the Campus Garden, and more, make sure to join us for these upcoming events:
- August 19: Campus Services & Information Fair (info in New Deac Week app)
- August 23: Dig In at the Campus Garden
- August 27: Fall Involvement Fair
- September 2: Let’s Taco-Bout Sustainability

Interested students can sign up on the Sustainability mailing list to get updates from the Office of Sustainability.
Whether your Deac is an incoming first-year student or a senior, the Office of Sustainability is one great option for getting involved on campus in a meaningful way. If this sounds like something your student might enjoy, be sure to share it with them.
