Homecoming Weekend has come and gone. It was an incredibly beautiful weekend, with gorgeous (if a bit chilly) weather. A couple of the weekend’s highlights stood out to me:
On Saturday morning was the dedication of Hopkins Hall, in honor of Beth Norbrey Hopkins (’73) and her late husband Dr. Larry Hopkins (’72, MD ’77). You can watch a recording of the dedication here. I cannot claim to know the Hopkins family personally, but throughout my time at Wake, I had worked various events (often at the nametag table so I could see everyone who came in), and there are no finer people than Larry and Beth Hopkins. A wonderful and deserving recognition for two incredibly special people.
And if the morning was a high point, so was the afternoon: Wake’s football game against SMU had a photo finish: a 50 yard fieldgoal to win the game. The kick just made it over the goalpost crossbar and hit the backstop. It was something to see. Wild celebration ensued, including a Homecoming rolling of the Quad. And even the New York Times took note: our [shirtless] Deac young men were featured in this photo accompanying a story about the shirtless dudes trend at college football games.
All in all, a great weekend to be a Deac. Now on to today’s news…
OPCD webinar for P’29s on Nov. 11
I am sharing the following information for P’29s on behalf of my colleagues:
The Offices of Family Engagement & Personal and Career Development (OPCD) invite you to attend a special webinar for parents & families of first year Wake Foresters to discuss: From College to Career: How Families and OPCD Help Students Take the First Steps to Success.
OPCD Webinar for First Year Families

The webinar will feature Andy Chan, Vice President, Dr. Heidi Robinson. Associate Vice President and Associate Professor of the Practice, as well as student panelists; they will cover the following topics:
- How can the OPCD help your student identify and work towards their career goals?
- What do families need to know about the “college to career” courses? When can students take these courses?
- How can parents and the OPCD work to help your student be “career and life ready”?
If you have specific questions you would like addressed, please ask them here.
This event will take place via Zoom Webinar. Registration will close at 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, November 10, and is required to receive the Zoom Webinar Login Information. We will share the Zoom webinar link on November 11 by 1:00 p.m. ET with those registered for the session.
Fall finals care packages for your students
My colleagues in Residence Life and Housing wanted families to be aware of the opportunity to gift your students a little pre-finals love via a care package:
“With finals season just around the corner, consider sending your student a Fall Finals Care Package to show your support. Each package includes classic snacks and a personalized note from you. This is just one thoughtful way to lift their spirits as they finish the semester strong. The deadline to order is November 8. Click here to learn more.”
A care package (or back in my student days, an unexpected $20 bill mailed to me by my dad) can mean the world. So do consider doing something special for your Deac if you can.
Summer construction projects in pictures
At every college campus I know, summer is the time for a lot of construction, planned maintenance, and renovation. It’s just easier to do those things when not in the middle of full campus occupancy.
This summer at Wake Forest was no different – there were a bunch of projects taking place, and some of my colleagues have created this pictorial before-and-after view of the projects. Hope you enjoy.
P’29 weekly message on registration
As we do each Monday during the Fall semester, we have a weekly topic for our new P’29 families to ponder. This week it is about upcoming course registration.
In closing today, your Deacs need to brace for a few days of suboptimal weather: we are going to be cold and rainy for several days. So if you detect a note of gloominess in your Deac’s voice/text messages this week, the weather may well be to blame. Our Deacs tend not to use umbrellas much (for reasons passing understanding) but I hope they all have raincoats with hoods.
For students participating in Project Pumpkin tomorrow, they will want to keep their eye out for any updates in case the event is moved indoors due to weather.
