To all the families who were able to make it to campus this past weekend, I hope you had a great time with your Deacs. The predicted rain did not materialize to the degree that I originally feared it would, which was a plus (as it turns out, we are getting the rain this morning). And if you were not able to join us, read on to our first story, where you can see a recap of the weekend!
Family Weekend photostory
We have a new photostory with coverage from Family Weekend. Hope you enjoy it – you might even see yourself or your Deac pictured!
Annual Fire and Safety report
The 2025 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is now available on the Wake Forest University Police website.
What the Liberal Arts Taught Me About Organizational Strategy
One of my colleagues shared a link to this article from the Perspectives on Sustainability Quarterly Newsletter. It is written by Erin Stephens Hamilton (’18), who works as the Assistant Director of Sustainability Strategy.
Her article discusses how her Wake education taught her “the importance of leading with curiosity, seeking out experts, asking the right questions, and synthesizing information from a wide range of subjects.” She explains:
“Though I didn’t know it at the time, Wake Forest’s time-honored liberal arts traditions had prepared me for a career navigating complex organizations and facilitating change strategies. It’s easy now to pinpoint that these lessons began in my Introduction to Journalism course, where, for what felt like the first time in my academic life, I was rewarded not for having the right answer, but for asking the right questions. The exercise of reporting was one of deeply investigating each curiosity, unpacking insights, and piecing them together.”
It’s a great article and I commend it to you. Erin’s reflections reinforce my long-held belief that no matter your major or minor, every Wake Forest student learns to write well, think critically, work in teams, and be creative and nimble problem solvers: all things that will serve them well in careers.
P’29 message: midterm exams
For our P’29s in the group, the weekly message for new families is about midterm exams. Your ’29s are likely a bit worried about their first set of midterms, and your reaction to their grades on same. So this message tries to help frame midterms and how you can be supportive.
Maps of Family Weekend guests
We’ll close today with something fun: these are pictures of the Family Weekend maps showing the places our various families live. I am impressed we had families from all over the globe. Click on the pictures to enlarge.

Hard to believe it is almost October! The first month of the academic year flew by for me (maybe for you/your students too?)
