Happy Thursday, Deac families! It’s almost the end of the week. Today I have a variety of bits and bobs to share with you – many of them about logistics and process kinds of news. Dig in!
Reminder re Senior Fifth
I was in a meeting earlier today with our Alcohol and Other Drugs coalition and was reminded that there will be some students attempting to do Senior Fifth tomorrow (i.e., trying to drink 750 ml of alcohol, or the equivalent of 16-17 shots, before Friday’s 8 p.m. kickoff).
If you missed the column last week, please read about Senior Fifth here and encourage your ’25s to make smart choices that prioritize their safety and wellbeing.
Interfraternity Council recruitment and webinar
For families with male students considering fraternity recruitment, my colleagues in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life asked that I share this information:
“Hi Parents & Families! The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Engagement is pleased to announce that Interfraternity Council Recruitment Registration opened on November 6. Registration will close December 6 at 11:59 p.m. EST. No exceptions will be made. Further details can be found here.
The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Engagement is also pleased to announce our upcoming IFC Parent/Family Information Session! We will be hosting a virtual session to provide valuable insights and answer your questions about the Interfraternity recruitment process and your student’s involvement in the fraternity experience. Parents and families will have the opportunity to submit questions to our team throughout the session.
You can register for the session using these links:
Families can also submit questions using this link.”
Note: it will be recorded, just in case you can’t make it live.
Spring 2025 meal plan info
Students received a message today about making changes to their meal plan for the spring semester:
“If you wish to decrease your meal plan for the spring semester, you must do so by January 6, 2025. After this date, you will not be able to change to a smaller meal plan. If you wish to increase your meal plan, you have until January 31, 2025 to do so.”
Thanksgiving airport shuttles
Our Office of Transportation and Parking Services offers Thanksgiving holiday airport shuttles to Greensboro or Charlotte; registration is open now.
If your student needs a reservation outside the posted schedule – or to the Raleigh-Durham airport – they can contact Black Tie Transportation, a recommended car service.
Sometimes families ask me why we don’t offer more shuttles/more times each day, or why we don’t serve the Raleigh-Durham airport. While I am not involved in these operations, I suspect it is because we run a robust shuttle service around town already and therefore are not staffed/equipped to make additional airport runs, many students use Uber or other rideshares, etc.
Polo Road paving
If you have students with cars, they may have told you about some of the work being done on Polo Road with installation of new medians. Happily, repaving has started!
You can learn about the project here.
Coming soon to your students: National College Health Assessment
My colleagues in the Office of Wellbeing wanted me to share some information to encourage students to take the National College Health Assessment, which will be sent to them on Sunday afternoon or evening:
“The NCHA is sponsored and distributed by the American College Health Association (ACHA). The ACHA-NCHA is a survey designed to assess student health behaviors in order to provide better services and support for Wake Forest students.
Students benefit from taking the survey by knowing that they have assisted in providing accurate information regarding health/wellbeing behaviors on our campus. The information will be used to develop wellbeing programs and services for Wake Forest University.
The NCHA is completed online via the Internet and typically takes about 25-30 minutes. Student responses are private and confidential.”
I am told that the last time students took this survey was Fall 2022. So we’re hoping to learn a lot about how these last few years have impacted our students’ health and wellbeing. Your students will be able to take the survey between Nov. 10-Dec. 1. Please encourage their participation!
