It’s been a very busy day in Daily Deacland, so we will jump right into today’s news.

Samantha Heyison to Represent Team USA at 2024 Paralympics

I saw a story in the WS Today e-newsletter today about one of our students who is in the Paralympics:

“Following her freshman campaign as a member of the Wake Forest track & field team, Samantha Heyison has qualified for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, France beginning on Aug. 28 and running through Sept. 8.

‘I’m honored and proud to represent Team USA at the Paris Paralympic Games,’ Heyison said. ‘I look forward to being alongside my talented teammates as we represent the Stars and Stripes on the biggest international stage in the world of sports and hopefully bring home a medal or two.'”

Read the full story. We wish Samantha all the best as Paralympic competition begins! Go Deacs!

Wake the Demons tonight/there will be fireworks

Tonight is our fun and festive Wake the Demons pep rally on the Quad. And in his enewsletter, our Director of Athletics John Currie reminds us that with Wake the Demons tonight and football season beginning tomorrow, there will be fireworks:

“Remember, the fireworks display has become a fun element of our campus football tradition, just as they are for the Carolina Classic Fair and Winston-Salem Dash. If you live close to campus, please be sure and remind your neighbors and friends to expect a little noise around 10 p.m. later tonight and every night-before-home football game during the season.”

Sometimes students forget about the fireworks (if they are on campus and studying) and the sound of the first fireworks startles them. Just a friendly reminder that it is only fireworks 🙂

Students should save the date for one of our mobile flu shot clinics

Deacon Health is once again offering influenza vaccines on campus for students, free of charge. No appointment is necessary for mobile flu shot clinics:

  • Friday, September 27 – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Manchester Plaza
  • Wednesday, October 2 – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Manchester Plaza
  • Monday, October 7 – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Farrell Hall
  • Tuesday, October 8 – 5 – 7 p.m., Z. Smith Reynolds Library
  • Thursday, October 24 – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Benson University Center

We will be promoting this to students in a number of ways, including their weekly WFU Should Know e-newsletter that goes out on Thursdays. But wanted to get those dates to families since some of you have already asked about flu shots.

How students will be notified in an emergency

Yesterday afternoon, University Marketing and Communications shared this message on how Wake Forest will communicate with students, faculty, and staff in an emergency.

Please fill out the Orientation survey, P’28 and transfer families

On Monday afternoon, we sent out a message to new P’28 and transfer families with a link to a survey about your Orientation experience. Many thanks to the families who have already responded.

If you have not yet completed the survey, please complete it as soon as you can. We really do read all feedback and make adjustments to future Orientations based on your feedback (in fact, several of the sessions this year were new and we really do want to know how they landed with you!).

Thank you in advance for helping us continually improve our offerings during Orientation!
