Happy FDOC (First Day of Classes), Deac families. After all the hurry scurry of move-in, we come down to the reason our students are here: to learn. Classes started today, and just as we mentioned last week, Second Summer is here. It is going to be a steamy week:

the steamy forecast for 8/26-30/24

As your Deacs start classes, whether they are a first-year student or a senior, remind them to focus on behaviors that are healthy and productive, because those will propel them forward in a good way. And remind them also to pay attention to how they feel, reflecting on what works well for them (or does not); that self-knowledge will help them make better choices in the future.

A list of Productive things Things to pay attention to

Best wishes to all our Deacs for a great fall semester!

FDOC message from President Wente

Dr. Wente shared a message with the campus community today in honor of FDOC, the First Day of Classes. It read in part:

“Happy First Day of Classes! Whether you just moved into your residence hall for the first time or you have been a part of our community for decades, I am so glad you are here.

The beginning of a new semester always brings a renewed sense of academic, creative, and intellectual energy. Your passions, talents, experiences, and questions breathe new life into our community each fall, and I have no doubt you will do great things – that’s what Wake Foresters do!”

Dr. Wente encouraged our campus community members to:

  • Engage deeply in the academic life of our community
  • Practice empathy daily
  • Seek common ground
  • Take care

It’s a great message, and you can read the full text online.

Campus Life Cookout tomorrow and Wake the Demons Wednesday

Tomorrow night (Tues. 8/27) from 5-7 pm, all students are invited to the Campus Life Welcome Cookout. This is a free cookout on Manchester Plaza with Shea Kidd Brown, Vice President for Campus Life. Encourage your Deacs to join in for food, games, and music!

And your Deacs won’t want to miss Wake the Demons, which is this high energy, pep rally type event on the Quad. It will feature:

  • Live DJ
  • Featured speakers: Dr. Wente, AD Currie, Coach Dave Clawson, Coach Randi Smart and more!
  • Free t-shirts
  • Post-event fireworks
  • FREE Food Trucks
  • Football traditions with the marching band, cheerleaders and dance team

It is the most fun – so I hope your students go!

P’28 and ’28 messages

In the flurry of move-in and Orientation, I think I neglected to call out the fact that each Monday of the fall semester, we will have a Weekly Message for First-Year families. But unlike the summer, when those were pushed to your inboxes via email, throughout the fall I will be linking them in the Daily Deac.

There are a couple of messages out there already: today’s is about school spirit, and last Monday’s was ‘If I do it, what is my student learning?’ I hope you will check both of them out, P’28s.

And our new ’28 Deacs got their first issue of Letters So Dear, which is a weekly message with advice from an upperclass (i.e., sophomore-senior) student or young alumnus/a, as well as some upcoming events of which they should be aware.

Orientation slide shows (to date)

For our P’28 and transfer families, I promised to share the slide decks from any Orientation programs that were sent to me. I have a number of them already. If you were not able to attend a particular session – or you were and want a refresher – you can access the PDFs below:

If more slide shows come, will share them here.

Welcome to Campus care package offerings

The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent this message to resident students’ families about optional Welcome to Campus Care Package Offerings in partnership with SWAK University Services.

As with these sorts of opportunities, we like to let you know that they are an option. Only you can decide if they are right for your family, so act on (or not!) as meets your family’s needs.
