Happy Fall Break Friday, Deac families! Wherever your student is – whether that is home, with a friend, or still on campus – I hope they slept in late and are partaking in lots of self-care, rest, and fun during their short break.

With many students gone, it is obviously a slower news time here, so I will hit you with just a few things today.

A guide in moments of crisis: ‘For Humanity’

President Wente has shared a message in her From Wente’s Desk blog that reflects on Pro Humanitate in times of crisis:

“National and global events – in addition to crises on campus – can and do impact the experience our faculty, staff, and students have at Wake Forest. We all recently witnessed, and are continuing to learn about, how Hamas militants conducted the most horrific terrorist attack on Israeli soil in history, creating fear and uncertainty for Jewish people around the world as well as in our Wake Forest community. Scores of innocent civilians were injured, kidnapped, or killed. As the scope of the atrocity has become clearer, heartbreaking details are revealed of the nature of the attacks. And now we are all witness to a new era of war unfolding, with an escalating humanitarian crisis in the region with effects that will echo around the globe.

What should – or what can – a University do in moments of crisis as significant and horrific as these? The answer is complex. Here are some of the top priorities that guide me and our University leadership team as we navigate and respond to crises.”

Fraternity and sorority recruitment/joining updates

One of my colleagues in the Fraternity and Sorority Life office asked me to share a few updates about events students or families should know about. First up is for the families:

Panhellenic Parent Information Sessions will take place December 6 at 7 p.m. and December 18 at 1 p.m. The registration link for December 6th is here. The registration for December 18th is here

And the next two notes are more student-facing:

Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment is now live. Students interested should register using their Wake Forest email address. The link for registration is here.

For any student who is interested in joining a NPHC fraternity or sorority, a general information session will be held October 19 at 6 p.m. in Pugh Auditorium.  Students can RSVP on The Link.

Campus blood drive on Nov. 1.

We included this item in yesterday’s student e-newsletter, but you might give it a bump with your Deac if they are the type to donate blood or they just want to do something to help others:

“Did you know that on average, a trauma patient in the  Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Emergency Department uses approximately seven units of blood? The Red Cross Student Group is partnering with The Red Cross to host a blood drive on Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. in Sutton Center 407. Please sign up here to donate and give the gift of life by donating. You can make a difference in someone’s life!”

A PS to my article on executive functioning

I was happy to get a few emails after yesterday’s Daily Deac that shared the article on college students and executive functioning. One person asked me if there are things that can help students who need more support, and one option to consider is academic coaching in CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success). You can read more about academic coaching here.

CLASS also has a page on study strategies, and I can’t say enough good things about the Comprehensive Syllabus. This comprehensive syllabus was a tool I shared with my ’27 and he has said it is really helpful.

My advice to students is to take advantage of all the tools you can. Try them out and see what works for you.

As we conclude Fall Break this weekend, please give some extra TLC to your Deacs. Send them back to campus with some favorite treats, or Venmo them a little unexpected $. They will love it.
