Today we have a variety of news items to bring you, so I will dive right into it. Here goes!

Student Health Service (SHS) sees an increase in appointments for upper respiratory illness, including COVID-19

We shared this information with students in their WFU Should Know e-newsletter, which goes out every Thursday afternoon. I thought families might want to know this as well, because some of your students (like mine) might have come down with one of the typical fall illnesses we see at the start of school.

“As is typical with the start of the Fall semester, Student Health Service would like to make you aware of an increase in appointments for upper respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. At this time, students are reminded to:

  • Follow the advice of the healthy habits message shared with the campus community at the start of the semester, which encourages:
    • Regular hand-washing;
    • The use of a tissue or coughing/sneezing into your elbow;
    • Wearing a mask if you are coughing or sneezing to avoid spreading germs;
    • Cleaning surfaces daily using antibacterial solutions; and
    • Staying home if you are sick or have a fever.
  • Students do not have to report a positive COVID-19 test to the Student Health Service as most symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medication. However, students who have tested positive for COVID-19 should isolate in place in their residence hall room/off-campus residence. Students who are severely ill or not improving should make an appointment with SHS for evaluation.”

If a student is ill, they should be communicating with their faculty members about their absence and working with them on making up assignments. The aforementioned healthy habits message has guidelines for how long students should stay home before returning to class based on type of illness.

On the home front, I am happy to report that my ’27 with COVID started feeling better yesterday, and seems even better today (if still pretty congested). He’ll probably wait to return until Sunday, just to give his roommate and classmates the benefit of absence.

Safety Advisory: Vehicle break-ins

In our same WFU Should Know student e-newsletter, there was a safety advisory about vehicle break-ins. Police received reports of three break-ins at Deacon Place Apartments and three in the parking lot at the University’s Indoor Tennis Center (499 Deacon Boulevard). In response to these reports, University Police is increasing patrols in these areas. Police have asked students to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of view. Read more on Inside WFU.

Corey D.B. Walker named Dean of the Divinity School

The campus received an email this morning about Corey D.B. Walker being named Dean of the Divinity School following a national search. Here is an excerpt from the message (read it in full here):

“Corey D.B. Walker has been named Dean of the Wake Forest University School of Divinity, effective immediately. Dean Walker is a distinguished scholar of religion and Wake Forest Professor of the Humanities and has served as interim dean for the school since January. He is an ordained American Baptist clergyperson who preaches and teaches in congregations and universities across the nation and has published broadly on African American religion and philosophy, African American history and culture, and religion and American public life….Dean Walker joined the Wake Forest faculty in 2020 and established Wake Forest’s African American Studies Program. Congratulations to Dean Walker!

I’m hoping that today is the last day in the 90s and that proper fall will be coming our way soon. Leaves are already changing colors on campus – I want the temperature to catch up with the visuals 🙂
