I told you last week not to be fooled by False Fall, and that Second Summer was coming (as seen in the 13 Seasons of NC meme, a favorite). Second Summer is here, friends:
But at least the sun is out. It may be hot, but it is at least pretty outside.
Fire Safety and Building Reminders
The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent this message to resident students about fire safety, how our alarm systems work, and more.
Student Involvement Fair (and what to do if your Deac has a conflict)
Our Student Involvement Fair is taking place today until 6 pm on Poteat Field, and I would encourage your Deacs to go if at all possible. I got an email today from a P’27 who has a student who will be in a class or lab the whole time the fair is going on, and asked what their student could do.
Never fear, there is always an alternate pathway! In this case, it is the Office of Student Engagement, which exists to help every Deacon find their place. Any student who can’t make the fair can go to this web page to see an overview of how they can get connected.
I would encourage Deacs in this situation to complete the Interest Matcher and set up a time to meet with an Engagement Consultant to come up with a Personalized Engagement Plan. Students can also browse the various student organizations on The Link (our engagement platform) and can reach out individually to the contact person for organizations of interest and ask to get on their distro lists.
Letters So Dear and Weekly Message for First-Year Families
For our P’27s, your Deacs got their weekly edition of Letters So Dear yesterday; you can read that here. And every week, I post a new topic on our First-Year Families (’27) page. This week’s topic is adjusting to the academic workload, and homesickness; read it here.
Additionally, the Office of Residence Life and Housing sent this message to first-year students to ensure everyone had a chance to get their The Forest t-shirt for their residence hall (or exchange sizes if needed).
Update on my first-year
Many of you have been so kind and have asked how my first-year student is doing at NC State. He had a remarkably smooth transition and has been very happy. It helped that he is in marching band and got to arrive a few days earlier for band camp (and that helped him meet people), plus he is in their Honors College, so he lives on the Honors Quad and has a seminar and extracurricular activities with that. Their FDOC was a week before Wake’s, so he is getting the hang of classes.
Sadly, a bunch of the clarinets in his section got COVID, and so did my dude, so he is home to recover. His is not the ‘feels like a cold‘ type COVID, it’s ‘feels like a bad flu‘ COVID, which stinks. So we are masking up and hoping we don’t get it too. All positive thoughts welcome.
