Move-in for our first group of Pre-Orientation new students starts today, and I am so excited. There is nothing quite like a college campus bustling with young people, so full of energy and excitement and idealism and passion. I can’t wait til all our students are back. Let’s GO!

I’m going to be pulled in many Orientation directions over the next week, so the Daily Deacs might be a bit briefer while we are so busy.

Weather for the coming days (hot)

The good news for our move-in forecast is it doesn’t look like we have rain coming. The bad news is that it is going to be pretty darn hot (see forecast pic below). So just a friendly reminder to wear lightweight clothing, consider sunscreen and a hat, and bring a refillable water bottle (we have refill stations all over campus buildings) and stay plenty hydrated.

Weather forecast 8/18-23 (it's mostly high 80s to mid 90s)

WFU to work with Carter and Front Street Capital to redevelop Deacon Blvd. area

Yesterday, it was announced that Wake Forest has selected the team of Carter and Front Street Capital to explore redeveloping University-owned property, east of the Reynolda Campus adjacent to Allegacy Stadium, Couch Ballpark and the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum:

“Wake Forest and Carter/Front Street are collaborating with the City of Winston-Salem to develop an initial transformative vision for a lively mixed-use development with the goals of stimulating economic activity and reinforcing Winston-Salem’s position as a leading tourism, sports, and entertainment destination.

This part of our city to the east of Wake Forest’s Reynolda Campus presents numerous opportunities for business, residential, and retail spaces. We want to support a thriving community where people can live, work, play and stay, with a goal of ensuring the area between Reynolds Boulevard and Coliseum Drive serves our Winston-Salem community. Adjacent to several residential communities, including the historic Boston-Thurmond neighborhood, our exploration of development opportunities with Carter/Front Street will be guided by a strong commitment to our community’s collective wellbeing.”

This is a really exciting development and I can’t wait to see what comes of this initiative. Read more.

Photostory: hands on research

One of the differentiators at Wake Forest is that our undergraduates have the opportunity, if they wish, to get involved with research with faculty, even as early as their first year on campus. I am a big fan of scholarly research – it helps students think about the work that faculty do, and how to add to the body of global knowledge, and it is also a way to expose them to scholarship as a potential future career.

My talented colleagues have put together this photostory about some of the hands-on research that our students have been doing. Enjoy it!

Be sure to get your black season t-shirt in preparation for the “wear black” games against Elon (Aug. 31) and Florida State (Oct. 28).
