Happy Thursday, Deac families. We are experiencing a Very Steamy Thursday. My Weather Channel app says we are at 93 right now, but the heat index makes it feel like 99. If the forecast remains unchanged, we’ll get a “break” on Monday, when it is projected to be a relatively mild by comparison 88. Our Summer Session II Deacs are sweating for sure.
Here are a few things to think about today. As always, take what serves you and skip over what doesn’t.
A PS about housing assignments for new students
I heard from a new family yesterday that their student was feeling concerned about how well they think they will fit with their roommate (who seems to be philosophically quite different from themselves). My own first-year roommate and I were miles apart in that regard, but we shared our space very well.
For all students – whether you feel a deep kinship with your assigned roommate or “we’re not at all alike!’ with your roommate – having a roommate means you will have to adjust and compromise. If you keep your eyes on the prize of sharing the room peaceably, and commit to being kind, diplomatic, and being willing to give and take, you’ll be setting yourself up for success.
I also forgot to mention something I usually say when housing assignments are released, and that is that some students may be chagrined that they wanted a roommate and did not get one. If your new Deac is in this situation, you must trust me when I say that sometimes not getting what you want can be a wonderful stroke of luck! In 24 years of working with students, I can remember only a couple of times that a student or family member called me unhappy about being in a single. I get far more calls about students not being happy with their roommate. If you are in a single and you don’t like your roommate, you have no one to blame but yourself 🙂
New families: suggested move-in times for August 23
For our new families whose students are NOT doing a Pre-Orientation program, the Office of Residence Life and Housing has shared Suggested Move-In Times for new students. Having these times helps us manage traffic and keep things flowing as smoothly as possible.
We’re working on a Move-In Guide, which we will share with you closer to move-in, but for those who like to plan ahead, we wanted you to be able to see these suggested times now.
Setting a budget for new students – quick survey
We had a great question from a new Wake family about how to determine a reasonable budget for their student. The student’s meals are already accounted for via the meal plan, and the family will purchase the student’s textbooks. Their question is – how much will they need each month for “extras”? And a follow up question: what were the “extras” they spent money on?
Please take this quick 2-question survey and weigh in, Been-There-Done-That upperclass families. We’ll share the results if we get a enough of them.
Did you know: you can hit ‘reply’ on Daily Deacs
I know we have a lot of new families within the Daily Deacdom, so I thought it might be helpful to shed light on a procedural thing. Some families have wondered if they can reply to Daily Deacs (either with comments, questions, etc.) The answer is Yes!
When you hit ‘reply’ on a Daily Deac, that gets routed to me 🙂 and I do my best to answer everything that comes my way. Even if your question/message has nothing to do with that day’s Daily Deac, I will still receive it and will respond as soon as I am able.
Vote for Graylyn!
Wake Forest’s Graylyn Estate and Conference Center is thrilled to be included in voting for USA Today’s Top Boutique Hotels of 2023! Twenty incredible properties were nominated by a panel of travel experts as the best boutique hotels in the country for offering unique accommodations in the middle of some of the nation’s greatest destinations, and Graylyn made the list. Please vote for Graylyn!
Issue with Verizon calling seems to have resolved
Information Systems sent a message to campus today with an update on a service issue. There apparently had been an issue yesterday with Verizon, but that appears to have resolved. Read more.
Finally today, we acknowledge our Wake families who are observing Ashura.
That’s all I’ve got for you today. Stay cool wherever you are, Deac families!
