News from many corners of campus
Want to acknowledge there have been some hiccups in the send-out time of the Daily Deac. Our third-party push service is supposed to send it each weekday between 5-7 pm. Twice this week, it has not gone out on time and has only gone out between 7-10 pm. Wish I had a fix, but why this is happening is a mystery. Thanks for your patience. Today has been nonstop meetings for me, so I am going to bring you news from lots of different offices on campus.
This morning, Dr. Hatch sent an update to the campus community about our efforts for diversity and inclusion at Wake Forest. He said, in part: “Today, I want to share with you new and developing initiatives as well as a range of resources and programs devoted to enhancing our campus climate. The following actions fit into three categories: expanding equitable student experiences; sustaining a more welcoming campus climate; and enhancing community engagement.” You can read the full message here.
Just a reminder for our P’24s: your students were expected to complete Module I of New Deac 101 by today. To complete the requirement, students need to visit canvas.wfu.edu and log in with their WFU student credentials (e.g. WFU email username and password). If they need details about New Deac 101, they should review the following message in full. Our ’24 students should also note that Module 2 is now available and will be due October 1st.
In case your Deacs may be interested, wanted to make you aware of ResilientWake Weekend Challenges, which give an opportunity for students to connect through building targeted resilience skills via a Zoom gathering, multimedia resources and some gamification to engage in the process over a weekend and beyond. The first will be next weekend, beginning Friday, September 11, and will focus on Building a Routine and Creating a Resilience Plan for the semester. Students can sign up here. Longtime Daily Deac readers know that resilience is one of the skills I like to stress the most, because having good resilience skills are critical to your students’ growth and development.
We are seeking WFU COVID-19 Peer Ambassador and COVID-19 Peer Consultants; these foster volunteer and paid student leadership opportunities while creating a safer and healthier campus environment following public health guidelines related to COVID-19 for Fall 2020 and possibly beyond. Students can get more information or apply here.
A survey went out this week to all WFU undergraduate students inquiring about their experience and preferences for sexual health education. Please urge your students to check their inboxes and take the survey so that we can have a full and complete picture of students’ needs.
In COVID news, your Deacs got their quick hit e-newsletter, Your Corona Chronicle, yesterday; read it here.
Will close the week with a special opportunity for students who are interested in leadership and character:
The Program for Leadership and Character invites students into personal reflection on issues of leadership, character, and the good life via discussion groups. As in past semesters, staff will lead a Leadership and Character in College discussion group that considers the nature of the good life and how we can live such lives in college and beyond. This group will ask such questions as “What is the purpose of college?” and “What role do friendships play in the good life?
There will also be three affinity groups that consider questions of leadership and character in relation to specific topics: Technology and the Good Life will reflect upon human flourishing in relation to modern technologies; Leadership and Character in Religious Life will examine understandings of leadership and character in light of spiritual beliefs and practices; and Leadership and Character in Greek Life will explore how fraternities and sororities might cultivate leadership and character.
Students can sign up for any of these groups by visiting https://cutt.ly/landcfall2020. We encourage students to sign up no later than September 6 for the Leadership and Character in College group and no later than September 13 for the affinity groups.
As with every Friday, reach out and give your Deacs a call and have a check in. That connection to home and your loved ones is so important, and you can be a big influence in reinforcing masks, social distancing, handwashing, and reducing high-risk behaviors.
We will be dark Monday for Labor Day, and the Call Center will also be closed on Monday. Have a great and safe long weekend, y’all!
