When I let my dogs out this morning, it was legitimately cool outside – like high 40s, cool enough that I would have wanted a jacket. I suspect some of our students with 8 a.m. classes might have been surprised by the temperature. Mother Nature is going to zig-zag us from the highs in the mid-60s to the mid-80s this week, so always good to check the forecast before heading out for the day.

Here’s today’s news – take what you need, skip what you don’t.

Wake Alert messages issued last night/early this morning

There were two Wake Alert messages issued after midnight last night related to a heavy police presence around the LJVM Coliseum. No one affiliated with Wake Forest was believed to be involved and there was no threat to the campus or the surrounding area. You can read the messages at Wake Alert.

As a reminder, if you wish to receive campus safety alerts, download the WakeSafe app and enable notifications.

Family Weekend photostory

This photostory is a terrific wrap up of all the fun of Family Weekend. Check out all the photos and see if you family/student are in there!

Showcasing undergraduate research

One of the highlights of Family Weekend is always URECA Day (URECA stands for our Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Center). This is a time where students show posters and explain the research they have done with faculty mentors. Our students tackle some complex research questions and it can be hard to explain – so our intrepid videographer had a special reporter on the case: his 6 year old daughter Elaine. See how our Deacs explained their projects to her. Hint: it’s adorable.

We also invite you to read this news story about student research. From chemistry to engineering to biology to Spanish to math to theatre—more than 100 students had an opportunity to present at Wake Forest’s Undergraduate Research Day this year.

Congratulations to all our students who embarked on mentored research projects. This is one of the distinctives of Wake: at other, larger research-intensive schools, you might only have the chance to do mentored research if you are a Master’s or Ph.D. level student. Not here – you can do research with faculty from your very first year if you wish!

Donuts, Coffee, and Tech Help — All in One Stop

October is Cybersecurity Month, and Information Systems wanted to share this save the date for our students:

“Information Systems is back for the 5th annual Technology Do’s and Donuts!

Stop by Tribble Courtyard on Monday, October 19 from 10 a.m.-12 noon to recharge with donuts and coffee while getting the lowdown on everything IS has to offer, from WiFi and friendly tech support to software, high performance computing (HPC), cybersecurity safeguards, and the mobile apps that make campus life easier.

Many IS staff members will be on hand to answer your questions, so bring them along with your appetite. Do’s and Donuts is hosted in partnership with CLASS’ Academic Resources Awareness Week.”

Have a great night, Daily Deacdom!
