Today we have a lot of news to cover, so we will get right to it!
Construction slated for new pedestrian pathway to The Grounds
“Construction on a new pedestrian pathway connecting Faculty Drive to The Grounds will begin in early March. In partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the development and construction teams behind The Grounds will re-engineer the intersection at University Parkway and North Cherry Street. The goal is to simplify a complex roadway and slow traffic, creating a safer, pedestrian-friendly connection.
Currently, North Cherry Street splits from University Parkway, creating multiple, fast-moving traffic patterns. The redesigned intersection will consolidate traffic into a single, clearly signaled crossing. A robust grade-level crosswalk with a dedicated pedestrian signal will allow pedestrians to stop traffic in all directions by activating the stoplights, providing a safe crossing at the intersection.” Click the photo below to enlarge.

Walk with Wente: Tao Ma (neuroscience)
President Wente walks and talks with Dr. Tao Ma about his neuroscience research on the molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome. His goal: finding a cure. “The future is exciting and bright,” Ma said. Students – graduate students and undergraduates – are a key part of his research. “Many times, people think of science as just one person doing it alone…These days, especially for biomedical research, it’s really teamwork.”

Emergency testing March 11
If your Deac is not staying on campus during Spring Break, this will not apply. But wanted to let those with students on campus that there will be some emergency testing next week:
“Wake Forest’s safety and security team will conduct a full functionality test of the newly installed emergency lockdown system on the Reynolda Campus on Wednesday, March 11 between 10 and 11 a.m. During this time, all external doors will be locked. Deacon OneCards will not provide building access during the test. Entry into buildings will only be possible if someone opens the door from the inside. You may exit the building at any time during the lockdown. Normal operations will resume immediately after testing is complete.”
Emergency testing is an important part of the University’s ongoing safety preparedness and helps ensure all systems function as expected. If students have questions, they can contact Deacon One at 336.758.1949.
Summer School registration opens March 16
Current students (i.e., Classes of 2026-2029) got a message this morning about the opening of Summer Session registration. Here are some key facts from that message:
“With the sun coming out and Spring Break just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to consider spending your Summer in the Forest. Registration for Summer Session opens when we return from Spring Break on Monday, March 16. Whether you’re looking to get ahead on your degree, catch up on a requirement, or simply dive into a subject you are passionate about, Summer Session is the perfect way to make it happen.”
Current student registration begins March 16 in Workday:
- 8:00 a.m.: Students with 55+ completed credit hours
- 8:30 a.m.: Students with 54 or fewer completed credit hours
*Earned hours exclude AP, IB, BA, and any other hours earned prior to college.
Students can visit the Summer Session website to see the courses offered, tuition policies, housing, parking information, and more.
DESK is coming April 8
The student leaders of the DESK service project asked me to share this with the Daily Deacdom:
“Save the date for DESK: Wednesday, April 8 from 3-6 p.m. on Davis Field. (Rain date April 14). DESK is a long-standing Wake Forest tradition in which student volunteers and children from local Title I elementary schools come together to design and paint personalized study spaces for the children to take home. This year, we expect to have 70 desks.”
Interested students can learn more about DESK on The Link and follow their Instagram. This is a happy, joyous (and very colorful!) service project, and would be a lot of fun to get involved in. See some pictures of past DESK events below.
