Today is an absolutely glorious day. It’s sunny and about 68 degrees with a mild breeze. It really feels like Spring today, and with Spring Break just around the corner, the mood on campus feels really happy. It’s also really, really hard to focus on work when the weather is this nice and a looming break :)
Here’s today’s news…
Save the date for TEDxWakeForestU (March 22)
The student organizers of TEDxWakeForestU asked me to share this teaser with the Daily Deacdom:
“On March 22 from 2:00-4:45 p.m., join us on Wake Forest’s campus in Wait Chapel for this year’s TEDxWakeForestU event. Guided by the mission of TEDx, our goal is to create a platform where people can come together to experience Ideas Worth Spreading. This year’s event will feature eight brilliant speakers: Artis Stevens, David Yamane, Kele Eveland, Leanda Cave, Lenny Stern, Meryl Poster, Sariah Fischer, and Emilio Morgenstern. Each speaker will share their unique insights, showcasing the ways they’ve made a lasting impact in their fields and offering fresh perspectives on how we interact with the world. We invite you to be part of an evening of thought-provoking talks, meaningful connections, and inspiring stories from six remarkable trailblazers. Admission is free and open to everyone! Register here.“
If your Deac is not coming home for Spring Break and you’d like to find a weekend to come visit them, this would be a great time to come and hear these great speakers.
Leadership and Character discussion groups for the 2nd half of the semester
My friends from the Program for Leadership and Character let me know that they will be starting new discussion groups after Spring Break:
“Sign up for Leadership and Character Discussion Groups: The topics are: The Good Life in Religious Perspective(s); Murder the Truth; The Good, the Bad and the Squat Rack, and; Can I Laugh At That? The Ethics of Comedy.
Groups will begin the week of March 23 and will meet once per week for one hour each time over the next three weeks (March 30, April 6, and April 13). The deadline for students to sign up for a group is Wednesday, March 18.”
Longtime Daily Deac readers know that I am a huge, huge fan of these discussion groups. They have the potential to connect students (who might not otherwise meet each other) over a shared experience and deep conversation – which might make for more lasting friendships than something like a party. So if your Deac (or you, student readers!) is still wanting to find some meaningful social spaces, this is a good option to check out.
Wearing a weighted vest to strengthen bones? Make sure you’re moving
Wake Forest is making headlines with the results from a recent study about weighted vests:
“More time spent standing or stepping while wearing a weighted vest showed positive changes in bone mineral density, according to a new weight loss study from Wake Forest University….
Researcher Jason Fanning, lead author of the study and associate professor of health and exercise science, analyzed data from Wake Forest University’s INVEST in Bone Health for this study. The randomized, controlled trial led by Wake Forest colleague Kristen Beavers looked at whether wearing a weighted vest could help preserve bone mineral density during one year of weight loss. Participants were divided into three groups, and the weighted vest group wore the vest at least eight hours each day.”
Read the full news story. Whether you use a weighted vest, or are thinking about the health and wellbeing of older relatives, this study gives some new food for thought about how to use weighted vests most effectively.
Share your favorite local recommendations (if you have not already)
Many thanks to all who took this quick survey yesterday to share your local favorite spots. If you did not reply yesterday but want to, I will leave the survey up for a few more days. Your recommendations are so helpful to our new families.
I hope wherever you are, your day is as beautiful as it is in Winston-Salem!
