We’ve reached the end of the week, and after all the winter weather we have had, I bet everyone wants to be able to relax and get back to normal.
For those wondering how close we are to ‘back to normal,’ this is the view from my driveway at 12:30 p.m. today. We had not been able to move any of the snow on Jan. 25 because of the layer of sleet on top of it; it was just a brick. The second pic is from our cul-de-sac leading to the street that takes you out of my neighborhood.
All that to say it has been a long couple of weeks for everyone in W-S, y’all :)
And now, to today’s news….
Spring Involvement Fair (Tuesday, Feb. 10)
We have an event coming up next week that I want to draw the Daily Deacdom’s attention to: the Spring Involvement Fair. The fair will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 4-6 p.m. in the Benson Center.
The purpose of the Spring Involvement Fair is to provide an opportunity for students have a one-stop-shop to learn about our wide variety of student organizations, club sports, and departmental engagement opportunities. The timing of the Spring Involvement Fair is important, as introductions to student organizations can be especially helpful for transfer students who are new to the campus, student who have recently returned from study abroad and are looking to get engaged, as well as students who are still seeking their sense of community.
Here’s how The Link, our student engagement platform, describes the event:
“Kick off the new semester by finding your place! Whether you are looking to build professional skills, explore a new hobby, or simply meet like-minded peers, the Spring Involvement Fair is your gateway to getting the most out of campus life. This event brings together a large array of student-led organizations and departments, providing a vibrant space for you to discover how you can make your mark and get involved beyond the classroom.
Don’t miss this chance to refresh your campus experience and turn your interests into action. We look forward to seeing you there!”
National Inventors Hall of Fame to induct two Wake Forest School of Medicine researchers
We recently learned of some exciting recognition coming to two of our researchers:
“Two Wake Forest University School of Medicine researchers are among 15 innovation pioneers who will be honored in the 2026 class of National Inventors Hall of Fame ® Inductees
Dr. Louis Argenta and Dr. Michael Morykwas, both professors emeriti of plastic and reconstructive surgery, co-invented Vacuum Assisted Closure, a medical device that uses controlled suction to draw excess fluid from a wound while promoting its closure. V.A.C. therapy has been used to help millions of patients worldwide by treating a wide range of difficult-to-heal wounds, from surgical wounds to diabetic ulcers and burns.”

Do virtues like being compassionate increase your wellbeing?
Michael Prinzing, a research and assessment scholar here at Wake, shared some of his research on virtue and wellbeing:
“Virtues such as compassion, patience, and self-control may be beneficial not only for others but also for oneself, according to new research my team and I published in the Journal of Personality in December 2025….
Many studies have found that generosity is associated with happiness, and that encouraging people to practice kindness increases their well-being. But other virtues seem less enjoyable.
For example, a compassionate person wants to alleviate suffering or misfortune, but that requires there be suffering or misfortune. Patience is possible only when something irritating or difficult is happening. And self-control involves forgoing one’s desires or persisting with something difficult.”
So what did Dr. Prinzing and his team conclude? Read the full story to find out.
And that’s a wrap on this week! Have a great weekend, all!
