Today’s Daily Deac is all about Charlotte. There are two big opportunities that might be wonderful fits for our students (and their families). Here we go:
‘The Pearl’ semester: Wake Forest announces study away program in Charlotte
I am so excited to be able to share this news of a new and innovative program coming in 2027:
“Wake Forest is launching a new study away program in Charlotte for sophomores and juniors that will integrate rigorous academic inquiry with high-impact professional experience.
The program is designed to allow students to explore the intersections between business and the liberal arts. The first cohort in 2027 will tackle subjects ranging from the modern business landscape to data visualization and leadership and character….
Unlike many internship programs where students search for roles independently, Charlotte participants will be matched with identified opportunities at small and mid-sized for-profit and non-profit organizations.
‘Semester-long internships in emerging fields are vital to the evolution of higher education,’ said Wake Forest’s Senior Vice President and Chief Partnerships Officer Mercy Eyadiel. ‘They provide the deep, hands-on experience today’s workforce demands’…
Following the University’s Wake Washington Center model, students will live in fully furnished, shared accommodations within easy commuting distance of The Pearl [Charlotte’s innovation district].”
Longtime Daily Deac readers know I am a huge fan of the Wake Washington program, which combines academic classes with internships. Many of my former academic advisees did the Wake Washington program and just loved it – and many later had job offers from their internships. So it is very exciting to see us bringing that same model to Charlotte. You can read the full story here.
April 1 WF Baseball game in Charlotte
College baseball season is back, and we are very excited about our baseball Deacs. They are a terrific team to watch, and there is something uniquely American and special about watching a baseball game in the spring. And now you have a chance to do so – in Charlotte!
Wake will be playing Clemson on Wednesday, April 1st at Truist Field in Charlotte. If you were looking for a time to visit your Deac and do something fun, I’m just saying that Charlotte is a major airport and might be an easy way to fly down (or drive if you can), see the game with your Deac. There are options for a rooftop pre-game hospitality area, which would be a way to meet some other Wake alumni, families, and fans and have a blast before the game. And if time allows, you could come back to W-S to, maybe, take your Deac (and 5 friends) out to dinner the next night :)
April is also arguably one of North Carolina’s most beautiful months, so if you are living in a colder place where spring erupts a little later, this could be a good road trip for the soul.
