In this Issue: things you may want to do to show love to your Deac if they are coming home for Spring Break

I think it is fair to say that students are already feeling Spring Break Fever – itching for the break to arrive. They have been working hard all semester and are looking forward to some fun, restorative time.

Today’s blog is for families whose Deacs will be coming home for part or all of Spring Break. These are a few suggestions on ways to show your student some extra TLC when they are home.

  • Make their favorite homecooked meals.
  • Stock the house with favorite snacks or treats, particularly those they can’t get in Winston-Salem.
  • Let them sleep as late as they want (without commenting about what time they got up).
  • Related: cook something that smells great as they are waking up. (I still remember how wonderful it was when I would wake up to the smell of my mom cooking bacon for breakfast when I was home).
  • Revive a childhood tradition they used to love – whether that is taking a walk and getting hot chocolate (or coffee) afterwards, or going shopping at their favorite store, or shooting hoops in the driveway, etc.
  • Do them an unexpected solid: fill their car with gas (or take it to the car wash to get the salt off), or slide a little extra cash into their wallet (or Venmo, etc.).
  • Do their laundry (even though they have been doing it at school, it’s great to have someone else do it).
  • Let them pick what to watch on TV, and maybe give them the comfiest throw blanket for the couch.
  • Don’t bring up the thorny issue that you can’t agree on; leave contentious topics out of the break

You get the idea.

I remember in high school, my dad was an early riser (and my mother was not). Each morning, he would make coffee. And about 20 minutes before my mom would get up, my dad would fill an empty mug with very hot water so that her first cup of morning coffee would stay extra hot, just like she liked it (this was before the days of insulated mugs and Yetis).

So whatever the equivalent of the ‘warm up your mug’ gesture would be for your Deacs, think about how you might do that for them over break, just to show a little extra love.

Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy, so I am trying to focus on the fact that the forecast is calling for high 60s/low 70s this weekend. If you are not following @wfuniversity on Instagram (and you should!), you might have missed these pics of students enjoying a recent warm Friday afternoon.
