I am happy to report that Winston-Salem has dodged the ‘power outage’ bullet. Although the forecast had predicted freezing rain (which is what causes icing on power lines), we trended towards sleet (which does not accumulate on trees and power lines). The sleet helped us a lot.

What the sleet did not help, however, was that we had hours of tiny ice pellets landing on top of the snow and compacting things down. When I let out my nearly 100 lb Bernese Mountain Dog this morning, his feet did not sink down into the snow; he stood on top of it without the top layer of ice cracking. So that’s where we are.

Update on Tuesday classes

The BLUF (Bottom Line, Up Front) today is there will be no in-person classes tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 27, but remote/virtual learning. You can read the full Wake Alert message.

OPCD event changes

I received a message from the OPCD about a change to scheduled programming:

“Due to the weather, we are changing the date of the Link To Business: The Liberal Arts Advantage event from 1/27/26. The new date is 2/3/26 at the same time and location.”

Students should be sure to check Handshake for event status of any events they are interested in attending, lest any need to be rescheduled due.

Snow pics and videos

Kudos to my photography colleagues who managed to get coverage of students enjoying the snow, as well as this video of Snow in the Forest. And hats off to Winston Miller (’28) who sang and played in the snow. Love this!
