Before we get to the meat of today’s Daily Deac, I want to thank all our readers for your understanding and grace re: responses to emails you are sending me (or other departments).

Whenever we are approaching a major issue like this winter weather, it is an all-hands-on-deck situation to handle the immediate pressing things we are trying to plan for and communicate. Once we get through the urgent stuff, we will get back to our inboxes. Thank you for your patience in the interim.

Winter weather info

EDITED 4:49 pm: I wrote most of this Daily Deac before my emergency management meeting late this afternoon. We just got this Wake Alert message saying Wake Forest is closed Sunday and Monday.

You can see updated weather forecasts at these local stations:  WXIIWGHPWFMY and Spectrum News 14.

We shared the Winter Weather Preparedness website yesterday with students, and also here in the Daily Deac, so everyone can be on the same page. It’s especially important for students with cars to follow the guidance on where to park (and where not to) so our teams are ready to clear roads.

During the weekend (and into next week if it comes to that), students should be going directly to departmental websites for updated info on dining, parking and shuttles, wellbeing center/campus rec, etc. Those departmental web sites will have the most current info on their operations.

We also want to make sure students know that Deacon Health has an on-call nurse available 24/7 to assist students with current healthcare concerns during non-clinic hours. Students should call 336.758.5218 and follow the prompts.

Walk with Wente with Errin Fulp of Computer Science

If you need to think about something other than winter weather (and I do!), we have a new episode of Walk with Wente for your viewing pleasure:

“President Wente walks and talks with Errin Fulp, professor of computer science, about his research on computer network systems and what ant colonies can teach us about cybersecurity. ‘We’d like to have that same sort of resilience, adaptiveness and self-healing in networks,’ Fulp said. He encourages his students to take courses outside of computer science and think about how they can integrate ideas from other disciplines to solve complex problems. ‘Computer science is a field that really touches every aspect of our lives.’”

Watch the episode and read more about Dr. Fulp.

My fingers are crossed for minimum impact to us, and all the Deac families who also have to navigate this weekend’s weather. Be safe, y’all.
