My inbox has been hopping with questions about the snow, so we will jump to that straightaway:

More about the winter storm

Several of you have emailed me asking for more information about winter storm predictions for this weekend and about the logistics of campus operations in this kind of situation. The University’s emergency management team met today to discuss this. They will evaluate the preparations needed for the anticipated storm and continue to monitor the forecast. As for the exact logistics, we will know more about University operations and safety guidelines as we get closer to the weekend and/or the forecast solidifies.

But I do want to offer some preliminary reassurance to worried families. To those who are asking, “Will there still be food service for my Deac if there is a big snowstorm?,” the answer is yes. There may be limited hours, and all venues might not be open, but there will be food options for students. Students will need to visit dining.wfu.edu to see that day’s hours of operation.

When I mentioned in yesterday’s Daily Deac that students might want to have food in their rooms, that was not because I thought there would be no food options on campus. Rather, it was because I know many students won’t want to trudge through the cold and snow to get food. All residence halls either have a microfridge combo in individual rooms (and a kitchen somewhere in the building), or for apartments (maybe suites, too), they have a kitchen area with a fridge and microwave. So I simply meant that if your Deac hates snow, they may want to get some microwave mac and cheese, or whatever their pleasure is, to have in the room if they wish. And students who do a lot of DoorDashing might find those services are not running if we get a lot of snow and ice, so they may want to have some things on hand.

To those who are asking, “What if there is a power outage?,” during snow and ice storms, historically, the residential buildings on campus (which are on their own power grid) have kept power when some of the houses and apartment complexes just off campus have not. We did have a non-snow-related power outage in February 2025, and in that case, campus offices pivoted to address the situation in various ways. Be assured that our emergency management team will provide direction to assist campus operations this weekend, if needed. For students living off campus in non-University housing, if their power goes out, they need to report it to Duke Energy (the main provider in our area).

I know I have not answered all the questions coming in to me, but this is what I know as of this moment. More to come tomorrow, and thank you for your patience in the interim.

I am a college mom, and I know it is difficult not to worry about our college students. But please be assured, we have good people in place who are thinking through storm-related issues. We have successfully navigated snowstorms in the past, and we are all working toward the same goal: supporting your students and their safety.

Belated congratulations to our Dance Team and Marching Band National Champions!

I am a day late in recognizing our NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, because I wanted to make sure I got all the details correctly listed!! Congratulations to our WF Dance Team and Marching Band for taking top honors at the 2026 UCA & UDA College Nationals – Combined Divisions Results for Division IA Game Day LIVE (Dance and Band). Go Deacs!!!!

Valentine’s Day care packages

My friends in Residence Life and Housing asked me to share this with our Deac families:

“Send a little love from home this Valentine’s Day. A Valentine’s Day care package, complete with goodies and a heartfelt message, is a simple way to make your student smile. The deadline to order is January 24.”

That’ all I have for today. Have a great evening, Daily Deacdom!
