Happy middle-of-the-first-week-back-to-work-after-New-Years to all who are observing ;) Our full complement of students is not here yet – in addition to women going through sorority recruitment, I suspect we have RAs and some student-athletes here early. It will be nice to get everyone back this weekend.

We’ll start off today by sharing some health info. Unfortunately it is flu season, so we want to do all we can to help our students stay healthy. Here goes.

Campus Health message – important reminders to keep our community healthy as school begins

A message about health and wellbeing was sent to students yesterday. Here is a taste:

“Before returning to campus, I encourage you to continue prioritizing your health and the health of others. Respiratory illnesses such as influenza, COVID-19 and RSV remain prevalent in many communities. To minimize the spread of illness in our close-quarters living and learning environment, practice good hygiene, stay mindful of your health and avoid close contact with anyone who is sick to help protect you and those around you. Visit the Campus Health website for additional guidance.

Once you return, please keep the following in mind:

  • Stay healthy on campus. Practicing good hand hygiene, regularly cleaning personal living spaces, and staying home when you are unwell help protect both you and our community. Learn more about preventing and managing upper respiratory illness on campus by visiting Deacon Health’s guidance page.
  • Academic continuity. Illness can affect your ability to engage fully in classes and activities. If you must miss class, communicate proactively with your faculty about your situation and expectations. Visit the Office of Academic Advising website for additional guidance.
  • Access care through Deacon Health. Deacon Health provides on-campus medical services for acute illness, immunizations and more. Visit the Deacon Health website to learn about available services, appointments and after-hours support.”

The Campus Health website also has some important reminders for staying healthy at the start of the spring semester; read the full message.

Families, one of the ways you can help us is to encourage your students not to be interacting with others on campus if they are not feeling well. We know everyone is excited to be back on campus and everyone wants to spend time with friends, but with all the flu that is going around nationwide, we want to do all we can to help limit the spread.

Rocky Hansen (’27) at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships this Saturday

We have some great news to share about one of our Cross Country Deacs: Rocky Hansen (’27) will be running this Saturday at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships.

Rocky had an incredible season this year, that included

  • a national runner-up finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships
  • being named ACC Men’s Performer of the Year for the first time in program history
  • being the first Demon Deacon to take home the ACC Individual Championship since 2001
  • claiming the NCAA Southeast Region Individual Championship.

As my colleague who shared this story put it: “Rocky Hansen has made it onto Team USA. Race is this Saturday. We have a group going to watch in Tallahassee.  These are all Olympians / pros he’s running against.”

Please join me in sending your best thoughts to our Deac Rocky for the race. Go Deacs!

Progress on The Grounds

When our Deacs return to campus (or parents/families who are helping them move back in), as you drive on University Parkway, you will notice that a lot of work is being done at The Grounds, the area that is being developed near our stadiums.

We held a groundbreaking ceremony in December before winter break for the administrative departments that will be moving to a new office building in The Grounds.

You can see progress and construction pictures, as well as renderings at The Grounds website. I particularly like the video you can click on, which gives you a 360 degree view of the site. And if you are not following The Grounds on Instagram, you should.

That’s the news for today, Daily Deacdom!
