Happy Pitsgiving Eve to all our students who will be celebrating tomorrow! Pitsgiving – our Thanksgiving feast a week before the actual holiday – will be 11 a.m-3 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. in the Pit and Mag Room. As past Pit decorations have said on Pitsgiving, “Gobble til you wobble” :)

A few items on tap for today:

Thank a Teacher program

I received word that the Thank a Teacher program is back:

“The Thank a Teacher program gives students an opportunity to thank faculty and staff who have made a difference in their education. Students fill out a short online form by Dec. 13 and their message will be sent to their teachers/staff members at the end of the semester.”

These messages mean a great deal to the faculty and staff who receive them, so if your Deac has told you they have a favorite professor or staff member, do encourage them to submit a thank you.

Retiree debate teams, coached by Wake Debate team members

I love this story so much because it is a great example of students taking their knowledge and using it to serve others – in this case, local retirees:

“Two debate teams faced off at Wake Forest University on Nov. 12. All of the debaters were over the age of 70. One was about to turn 97.

Inspired by the Wake Forest University Debate Team’s 2023 national championship, residents of Salemtowne Retirement Community launched their own debate society with the help of Wake Forest Debate students and debate faculty.

Wake Forest Debate partnered with the Wake Forest Lifelong Learning Program to host the first competitive debate between two retirement communities…the topic for debate: Should the U.S. repeal the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which protects the rights of U.S. citizens to keep and bear arms?”

It’s a great story, and there are many retired Wake faculty and staff members who live at Salemtowne, which makes this partnership even sweeter. Read the full article.

Weekly message for P’29s

I neglected to share this week’s message for P’29s yesterday, but wanted to make that right today. The message is about setting expectations for Thanksgiving break, which has a lot to do with balancing your first-year student’s independence with how you like you home life to run. There are some suggested Dos and Don’ts as well.

Wishing all our Deacs full plates, happy hearts, and a table full of joy tomorrow at Pitsgiving!
