Campus is quiet, y’all. A lot of our students took an early leave, and a good number of my colleagues are taking PTO this week. I have a few things to share today. I especially commend the first item, the video about what our Deacs are grateful for; it’s one of the best things I have seen in ages.
Video: what our Deacs are grateful for (grab tissues)
I’m not crying – you’re crying! Admittedly I am the Designated Cryer at work, because anything remotely sentimental gets me. But y’all need to watch this video of students talking about what they are thankful for. It’s really beautiful to see all the shout outs, and as a mom, I am proud to say moms are getting a LOT of love on this video. Special love goes out to the mom whose daughter shared that mom just rang the bell to beat stage I breast cancer – what a wonderful thing to be thankful for at this holiday season!
Reminder for students staying on campus for Thanksgiving to plan ahead for their needs
If your Deac (or you, for our student readers!) will be on campus during Thanksgiving, please be sure to be aware of the hours of operation website and plan ahead for needs.

Friday, November 28 – Saturday, November 29
- Shorty’s | 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m
Why do Wake Forest students roll the Quad?
There was a recent article in the Winston-Salem Journal about our tradition of rolling the Quad (i.e., toilet-papering our Quad trees after a big athletic win). The article is likely behind a paywall for you, but here is a snippet:
“‘On the old campus, students used to ring the bell in Wait Hall, an administration building,’ Ed Hendricks, a professor of history at Wake Forest who died in 2015, said in a 2006 article. ‘There was a bell pull that anyone could access, including students. When the university moved to Winston-Salem, there were bells in Wait Chapel but no bell pull. Students had to find a new way to celebrate.’”
The article goes on to suggest that “students at Reynolds High School [in Winston-Salem] had been rolling trees to celebrate victories, and Wake students, some of whom were RJR alumni, may have adopted that tradition.”
Revised WFU Annual Security and Fire Safety Report now available
Campus received a message this morning indicating that “a revised copy of the 2025 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is now available on the Wake Forest University Police website.
Changes include:
- A revision to the Title IX definition of fondling on page 73.
- The removal of numbering from the chart Procedures the Institution Will Follow on page 82.
- A revision to the Reynolda Campus crime statistics on page 126.
This report contains information regarding campus security, fire safety and emergency information. It also contains information about certain crime and fire statistics for the previous three calendar years, as well as resources and reporting options for victims of crime. The report also contains campus security policy statements, including those related to missing student notification, relationship violence, sexual violence, stalking and crime prevention. It also has information on how employees, students and others should report crimes.”
Black [and Gold] Friday at University Stores: big sales for all the shoppers!
This Friday is not just Black Friday, it’s Black and Gold Friday! You can get a leg up on your holiday shopping at the Bookstore online. Pro tip: they have a Black Friday code you can use on all their Black Friday deals.
Daily Deac will be dark Weds.-Fri.
Wake Forest’s administrative offices will be closed Thurs.-Fri. for the Thanksgiving holiday, and I am getting a little bit of a headstart with PTO on Weds. afternoon. Therefore, this is the last Daily Deac until we return to work on Monday, Dec. 1.
If you have a Deac staying on campus, be sure to be aware of our After Hours Help page in case you/they need it (and I hope you do not!)
Wishing you and yours a safe, healthy, and happy Thanksgiving! See you after the break!
