It’s a chilly morning here in Winston-Salem, and as you can see from the Quad Cam, the weather continues to be gorgeous, and fall continues to evolve in the color of our trees.

And many thanks to those who answered our 1-question survey about what is the best way to shovel snow. 65% of you chose ‘Shovel it every few hours, bit by bit’ (which is how I preferred to do it growing up in PA), and 35% chose ‘Wait until all the snow has fallen, then shovel all at once.’

Now on to today’s news…

Putting weighted vests to the test – a story about academic excellence in research

There is a new video about Dr. Kristen Beavers and her research on weighted vests. Her research shows that for older adults, wearing a weighted vest can help improve balance, strengthen knees, and even maintain bone density while supporting healthy, active aging.

Staying healthy as we age, and figuring out things we can do to help us age better, is something that concerns many (most?) of us. This research is helping to point the way to a healthier future for all of us: combining academic excellence with a drive to serve humanity.

You can take a deeper dive into Dr. Beavers’ research on weighted vests (and its findings) here.

Spring housing intent (for all students, including those abroad) and off-campus lottery due 10/22

Residence Life and Housing sent a reminder to all resident students about the following processes that are due tomorrow (Oct. 22):

“Spring Housing Intent: All students (on-campus or abroad) must submit spring intent by October 22. This intent lets our office know your plans for the spring semester.

Off-Campus Lottery Entry: Students who have earned at least four housing credits may enter the Off-Campus Lottery [due 10/22]. This indicates a desire to live off-campus before fulfilling the residency requirement. It is important to ensure that you have received an email confirmation of your entry into the lottery. If you have not received that email, that means you have not completed all the necessary steps to enter the lottery. Review the step-by-step guide here.

Particularly for families with students currently abroad – who might not be checking their WFU email regularly, if they are in an affiliate program – please be sure they review the message and take action accordingly.

Haunted Tunnels tradition returns

For any of our Deacs who embrace spooky season, there is a pre-Halloween event they might enjoy: the Haunted Tunnels.

“Come join us for a spooky exploration of the haunted toyshop under our very own Luter and Babcock residence halls.

Wake Forest University is built on top of a tunnel system, originally used for maintenance and heating. If you think old, abandoned tunnels sound creepy, then Anthony Aston Players‘ annual Haunted Tunnels event is the perfect event for you! Every year, we pick a new theme and transform the tunnel into a haunted house of sorts; an unmissable campus tradition! Enter at your own risk…”

This year’s theme is Haunted Toyland. The tunnels will be open on Monday, Oct. 27 from 6-9 p.m. under Luter and Babcock Halls.

Why your younger co-workers are dressing like it’s the year 2000 – Wall Street Journal article with Wake connection

The Wall Street Journal ran an article, Why your younger co-workers are dressing like it’s the year 2000, that has a Wake Forest connection:

“’I don’t know if it’s a joke on us, but I think it’s one of those things where we just have to laugh at ourselves and be like, “Did we really have to be so serious?”‘said Ebony Boyd, a Wake Forest staff member. Starting with her first teenage job 20 years ago, Boyd took a traditional approach to dressing for work because that’s what was expected. Now as an assistant director of integrative student services in the business school at Wake Forest, the move is about turning the table on a company to judge whether it’s the right fit for you.”

This might be an interesting read for those who work with younger employees. Note: you may have to be a WSJ subscriber to read the article.
