World Mental Health Day (Oct. 10)
Students received an email message today about activities during World Mental Health Day on Friday (Oct. 10). Here is a brief summary:
All students are invited to join the We Are Wake initiative on Friday in honoring World Mental Health Day. Students are encouraged to wear their “We” T-shirt and take part in campus activities that celebrate care, connection and community:
- Anyone wearing a “We” shirt on Oct. 10 will receive a 10% discount at the Campus Grounds coffeeshop
- Students are invited to visit the We Are Wake Student Spotlight on the Kentner Stadium video board and cheer on the Field Hockey Green Game at 5 p.m.
- Green hearts will be posted across campus and Wait Chapel will be lit up in Green to symbolize our shared commitment to mental wellbeing
You can learn more about our comprehensive call to care at we.wfu.edu.
What can you learn in 4 minutes?
Our faculty proved it’s enough time to spark curiosity, share discoveries and inspire the next big idea. Check out the video by one of my talented colleagues, who covered this academic project slam.
P’29s: encourage your ’29 to take their “Tell us how you’re doing” survey
Around the first 6(ish) weeks of the fall semester, we send a short, 8 question survey to our new students so they can tell us how they are doing. Here’s the opening of the survey email:
“First-year students are a vital part of our campus community, and we want to make sure we are creating a supportive environment that you can call home. To do this effectively, we want to hear directly from you.
This brief, 8-question survey explores your student experience and your first few weeks in The Forest. The data from this survey will help us better understand how we can continue to create an environment where you feel like you matter, belong, and thrive. The survey will be open through October 12. There are 3 survey incentives that will be chosen at random from survey participants. Those include a $50 Deacon Dining card, a private study space during finals, and (2) pregame sideline passes at an upcoming football game. Your confidential responses to the survey will be used for internal purposes only.”
Feedback is a vital part of the continuous improvement process at Wake Forest. My colleagues in Campus Life need students to tell us what hits, as well as what misses. So if you are a P’29, please encourage your first-year students to take this survey. It’s important to hear from a lot of the first-year class in order to understand trends.
Published author, future governor: Meet the ACC’s most interesting women’s basketball player
A colleague of mine shared this article about rookie Milan Brown of our women’s basketball team. Here’s a taste:
“It wouldn’t be hyperbolic to call Milan Brown the most interesting rookie in the ACC.
Consider this: The native of Baltimore, Maryland scored more than 2,000 points for Mercy High School and had a career so prolific there that she had her jersey retired while also netting a 4.1 GPA in the classroom.
She’s also a published author, having written two books.
And Brown calls fellow Baltimore native Angel Reese a role model, likens her own game to Russell Westbrook’s, and said Monday at ACC Tip-Off that she wants to be the Governor of Maryland by the time she’s 40. The current occupant of the Old Line State’s Governor’s Mansion, Wes Moore, has already tweeted about her.
And out of 33 Division I scholarship offers, Brown chose to embark on her collegiate career at Wake Forest — a team that has gone 16-45 over the past two seasons and has appeared in the NCAA Tournament just once since 1989.
So, why Wake Forest for this gifted athlete and sharp-minded student?
‘I chose Wake Forest because they had exactly what I was looking for athletically, but also in the classroom,’ Brown told SB Nation. ‘I considered some Ivy Leagues, which were really high contenders, but I chose Wake.'”
Admittedly – and with all due respect to any Ivy League grads reading this – I love when students pick Wake over an Ivy, or tell me Wake’s parent and family communications are better than their other child’s Ivy League school. All kidding aside, this is a fun article because it tells the story of a very interesting student-athlete, one who has broad goals beyond the court (to be governor!) and who has already accomplished a lot in her young life.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Spring housing processes email
Resident students received a message about spring housing from our Office of Residence Life and Housing. It contains important dates students should be aware of, as well as deadlines for things like the off-campus housing lottery for those who have fulfilled their residency requirement.
There were two versions of this email:
- Resident students currently living in university housing (i.e., residential communities)
- Students who are abroad in Fall 2025
So please be sure your students – particularly those currently abroad – check their WFU email so they don’t miss this important email.
