One of my former colleagues, University Photographer emeritus Ken Bennett, used to say that the best time to see fall foliage in Winston-Salem was the very end of October and the first week of November. And he would know, having done literally decades of pictures of Wake’s campus and the fall leaves.

After the rain we had the first few days of the week, we’ve got sunny skies ahead for the foreseeable future. Temps this weekend will be low of 41, high of 62. So it would be the ideal time for our students to take a study break and do a nice long walk around campus, or up through Reynolda Gardens, to look at the beautiful leaves and enjoy the weather.

I hope you saw the campus ghosts living their best “Pro BOO-manitate” lives on Instagram :)

Here’s a few things to know as we close out this week.

Night Market is next Weds.

I hope your Deacs will mark their calendars for our annual Night Market on Wednesday, Nov. 5 from 5-7 p.m. on Manchester Plaza. Night Market is a fun evening with free international food and a festive ambience surrounded by the party lights and fire pits on Manchester Plaza! The event also celebrates the immense value of international education and exchange worldwide.

Opportunity for summer study/internship in South Africa (scholarship available)

I was really excited to get a message from my colleague in Global Programs and Studies about a summer abroad opportunity – and this one is jam packed: it has both academic and internship components, and there is an application for a full scholarship:

“Students are invited to apply for the WFU/South Africa: Global Internships & Investing in Africa program, taking place in Cape Town and Johannesburg during Summer 2026. This program combines academic coursework with professional internships, giving hands-on experience to understand South Africa’s dynamic business and cultural landscape.

Students from all academic disciplines are welcome to apply. All applicants are also eligible to apply for the Rusty Johnson Scholarship, which provides full funding to cover all program costs. The application deadline is January 15, 2026.

Learn more and apply at: WFU/South Africa: Global Internships & Investing in Africa – Summer 2026.  Questions can be directed to Janice Claybrook, Director of Summer Programs & Scholarships, at claybrjw@wfu.edu.”

My ’27 did a summer session in Japan last summer and it was a fantastic way to have the experience of studying abroad but not miss anything that happens on campus in the regular school year (especially great for student athletes, cheer/dance/marching band students, students in majors where it is hard to be gone a full semester etc.) I hope interested Deacs will take a look at this program.

Students should register for the Face to Face student-led event with Mitt Romney

We shared this yesterday in WFU Should Know, the e-newsletter that goes directly to students each Thursday afternoon, but it bears repeating here:

Register for the Face to Face student-led event with Mitt Romney: The Face to Face student event will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, from 5-6 p.m. in Wait Chapel. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.”

So encourage your student to register for a ticket!
