As the proud mom of a marching band kid, it warms my heart to know that the newest members of the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black, our marching band, are moving in today. There is nothing quite like the marching band – and our cheer and dance teams – to help us all feel excitement and school pride and to get the fans going at big athletic events!
I will be out of the office tomorrow (but have a blog pre-loaded for you!) and I will be at the LJVM Coliseum bright and early on Saturday when students coming for most of our Pre-Orientation programs are checking in. If you are a P’29 Daily Deac-er and you are at the LJVM on Saturday morning, I hope you’ll come up and say hello. Wake staff will all have their gold or black nametags on (or you can look for me – I’m about 5’4″ with medium length grey hair and glasses).
We have a couple of great news items where Wake is faring well with national rankings, as well as a few other news and notes. Dig in!
Wake Forest named #25 on LinkedIn’s list of schools that best set graduates up for long-term success
Wake Forest was named #25 on LinkedIn’s first-ever Top Colleges ranking, which identifies the 50 U.S. schools that best set graduates up for long-term success. The ranking is built on exclusive LinkedIn data looking at career outcomes of alumni, such as job placement rates and advancement into senior-level positions, or how many alumni held an internship during their degree or started their own company post-grad.
Graylyn Named #2 ‘Best Boutique Hotel’ by USA TODAY Readers’ Choice
Awards
My friends at The Graylyn Estate shared the good news that Graylyn has been named the #2 ‘Best Boutique Hotel’ in the United States by USA TODAY’s Readers’ Choice Awards:
“After a nomination by a team of travel experts and weeks of voting, USA TODAY 10Best announced the results Wednesday, naming The Graylyn Estate as the only North Carolina hotel to make the list.
The Graylyn Estate features 85 historic and modern guest rooms nestled throughout the pristine 55-acre estate. Originally constructed in 1932, the estate was once the private residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bowman Gray. Later, the property was donated to Wake Forest University, restored to its original splendor, and transformed into a boutique hotel and conference center.
Graylyn’s legendary hospitality is experienced through timeless attention to service creating exquisite and unforgettable stays. Unique touches include serving guests Mrs. Gray’s Butterscotch cookies every afternoon and offering overnight guests unlimited ice cream in honor of Mr. Gray’s favorite treat. Graylyn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the second largest historic home in North Carolina and is a member of Historic Hotels of America.”
Congratulations to Graylyn!
Reminder about Saturday reception for P’29s moving their Deacs in for Pre-Orientation programs
For any of our P’29s who are moving their Deacs in for Pre-Orientation (or marching band, etc.), we want to remind you of the casual reception we will have from 4-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 in the upper gym of the Sutton Center, with very brief remarks at 4:30.
This is a chance for parents and families to meet each other and also meet some of our staff and administrators. We know not all of y’all can stay for August 20-21 family orientation, so this reception is a great bridge to make connections with each other and get access to some of the info that we would have shared on the 21st.
No rsvp is required and dress is casual – we know you will have been moving in! And your Deacs will be at their own Pre-Orientation activities in the 4-5 p.m. timeslot, so you will not be missing a chance to be with them. I hope you will join us.
Reminder re: student health insurance (required) and tuition insurance (optional)
Have you enrolled in or waived student health insurance? While not due until September 15, it might be easier to do it now before the craze of move-in. And remember that if you are interested in optional tuition insurance, you must enroll by August 24.
I don’t have a dog in the fight re: whether you want tuition insurance or not, but I want to make sure everyone knows it is an option if that is important to your family!
Emails to students going to spam (check your spam folder too, families!)
I’m sharing the following at the request of my friends in Residence Life and Housing. For reasons unknown, sometimes when students (or families) email housing@wfu.edu, our Housing colleagues’ replies are not going to recipients’ inboxes, but to their spam/junk/quarantine folder.
Similarly, sometimes emails to students generated by our housing portal software, StarRez, sometimes land in spam instead of students’ inboxes.
Families, please do an occasional search of your spam/junk folders for any emails from a wfu.edu account, and encourage your students to do the same – just to make sure there isn’t a message (or a reply to a message you sent) lurking in spam by mistake.
