I have been busy putting the finishing touches on our Move-In Guide for P’29s, which will go out tomorrow as our Weekly Message for New Families, so this will be a brief Daily Deac today. Here goes:

A video tour of the Bookstore

To follow up on last week’s share of the Q&A, one of my Bookstore colleagues shared this video tour that one of their marketing interns made. This may be especially helpful to share with new students.

Question about travel planning for students to return home for breaks

I got a great question from a Wake family about how to know when their student is free to leave for Fall Break or Thanksgiving break, or after finals, so they can buy airline tickets. I suspect others have this same question.

The best answer I have on plane tickets is that you need to wait until classes begin, then ask your student to look at their syllabus for each class to let you know whether the class is scheduled to meet the day before breaks.

I suspect most classes will meet the day before the start of Fall or Thanksgiving break, but the faculty member may make adjustments. While the Academic Services calendar on the Registrar’s website tells us the dates of breaks, individual faculty can always make adjustments on their syllabus.

The final exam schedule is also on the Registrar’s calendar page, and those will tell you the dates of final exams. However, you still want to have your student consult the syllabus for each of their classes before you take action, because it may be they don’t have a final exam proper, but a final paper/presentation instead, etc.

So as much as you may want to get a jump on travel plans, you will be better served to wait until your Deac gets through the first day of classes and knows their schedules per the syllabus for each class.

Meal plans become active on Wednesday, Aug. 20; important Pre-Orientation meal info

Students’ meal plans become active on Wednesday, Aug. 20. If your student is participating in a Pre-Orientation program, the program will provide meals.

Important note: If your student wants to get additional snacks/drinks during their free time away from the program, they will need to bring cash or a debit card to purchase those.

For families on campus August 20-21, you can use the Menu and Hours link on the Dining website to see what is open on a given day/time. You can also see local dining recommendations from other Wake Forest families.
