It’s Wednesday afternoon, which means we are officially halfway through the first week of school. Our students are trying to find their rhythm, their best academic routines, and/or their friend groups. Remind them it will take time, patience, and effort to get there, and that things don’t all fall into place neatly during Week One :)

The weather continues to be cooler than the typical August, giving a tantalizing glimpse of what fall might be like. But don’t get too cocky, Daily Deacdom: it is not truly fall. My go-to meme about NC weather doesn’t have an obvious choice for where we are right now weather-wise:

NC has 12 seasons meme

To me it doesn’t feel like Summer, nor Hell’s Front Porch (thankfully), nor False Fall. Someone more clever than me needs to come up with a 13th season :)

Now onto today’s top stories…

OPCD Career Events: What is Consulting? (9/2) and What is Marketing? (9/4)

The Office of Personal & Career Development is helping your student explore career paths with two great events next week.

What Is Consulting? | Tuesday, September 2 | 5:30 p.m. | Virtual Event

Is your student curious about consulting? This virtual panel with recruiters and alumni will demystify the industry, explain different career paths, and answer questions. It’s a perfect first step for anyone considering the field.

What Is Marketing? | Thursday, September 4 | 4 p.m. | A31 Broyhill Auditorium, Farrell Hall

From creative storytelling to data analysis, marketing has something for everyone. Professor David Robertson will provide an overview, and a student panel will share insights from their industry internships.

Your student should sign up on Handshake to attend either event.

Move-in survey for P’26s, P’27s, and P’28s

Residence Life and Housing would like feedback from P’26s, P’27s, and P’28s (and their students!) on your move-in experience. Students and family members in the Class of 2026, 2027, and 2028 are invited to share their feedback in this survey. The survey should not take more than 2-3 minutes.

New students and Transfer students should have already received an email directly from the Office of Orientation, New Student and Transition Programs to provide their feedback about Pre-Orientation Programs, their Move-In Experience, and New Deac Week.

Forbes Recognizes WFU as a Best Employer for Women in 2025

Wake Forest is proud to be recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best Employers for Women in 2025. The University ranks 45 out of 700, and it is one of only two North Carolina employers on the list….

‘Being one of America’s Best Employers for Women is a proud moment for Wake Forest and a celebration of all the people who make this community extraordinary,’ says Vice President and CHRO Mary Lucal. ‘This recognition shows what’s possible when we champion our colleagues, and I’m pleased to celebrate this milestone.’”

A few important dates/reminders about Family Weekend registration and t-shirt sales

I hope many of our families in the Daily Deacdom have already registered to attend Family Weekend (Sept. 26-28). I was asked by our Family Weekend committee to share a couple important reminders with you:

  • September 1 is the last day to cancel your existing Family Weekend registration and receive a refund.
  • September 1 is also the last day to pre-purchase Family Weekend t-shirts
  • September 21 is the last day to register for Family Weekend at the $50 registration fee level; should you need to register after that, you will need to do so onsite starting September 26, when the registration feel will be $75, so it is to your advantage to register early!

Classes on Labor Day? Yes

I got a very understandable question from a new parent today: does Wake have classes on Labor Day? The answer to that is yes. Undergraduate classes are in session, though staff members have a holiday.

The Academic Services Calendar on the Registrar’s website is where students see all the important global dates for the semester. My assumption is because we just started classes this week, and we need to have a specific number of instructional days every semester, that is why students and faculty are in class this coming Monday. Administrative offices will be closed, and we will be dark here at the Daily Deac on Monday.
