Sunday Steamies

Sometimes our students talk about the “Sunday Scaries” – hating the fact that the weekend is about to end and the workweek is about to begin. I’d argue that we are living in the Sunday Steamies – where it is really hot and humid.
We had a couple of big storms this weekend that prompted a Wake Alert. Your Deacs may be wondering why they are getting that alert if they are home for the summer. But students could be visiting friends here for summer school, working locally at an internship or job, etc., You would be surprised at how often that happens. So we would much rather cast a wide net and alert everyone, vs. miss someone who needed that message.
Now on to today’s news.
President Wente to chair ACC Board of Directors
“With the arrival of the new athletic fiscal year last week, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and its Board of Directors have announced that Wake Forest University President Susan R. Wente will become Chair of the ACC Board of Directors. ‘It is a privilege to be selected as the next Chair of the ACC Board of Directors,’ said President Wente. ‘We are in the strongest position ever due to our unwavering focus on academic excellence, athletic competition at the highest level, and integrity.'”

Calling all tennis lovers: the Winston-Salem Open is coming
For families who are starting to think about their travel plans to campus for move-in, I want to plant a seed for an event you might really enjoy: The Winston-Salem Open.
Experience professional tennis like never before! Winston-Salem is privileged to host one of only three ATP 250 men’s professional tennis events in the USA, a testament to our deep roots in the sport. This August, from the 16th to the 23rd, you can watch top-tier tennis talent up close and personal. Enjoy an unparalleled, intimate viewing experience right here at WFU.

Fall course registration for ’29s opens July 16 (Weds.)
Our incoming ’29 students will be registering for classes starting on Wednesday. The weekly message to ’29 students last Monday was A Field Guide to Registration, and it has great info for them. In addition, there are a ton of resources on the New Students website. If your ’29 has not already done so, please encourage them to get cracking and review the Planning for Registration information, the Class Registration page, and the step by step registration instructions.
It would behoove all ’29s to make a few different saved schedules, which they can use on registration day to try and enroll quickly in the classes they most want. (Note that your ’29s likely need to be logged in to their WFU account to see the video tutorial on saved schedules).
Students should also check ideally today (but no later than tomorrow in my opinion) if they have any holds that would prevent them from being able to register; there was also mention of a different potential hold on this page. This is not the kind of thing they want to find out on Wednesday at their registration time! So take care of that well in advance, ’29s.
And tell your ’29 not to panic if they don’t get their A-list schedule and have to grab classes from their B, C, D, or E-list backup. ’29s cannot join waitlists this summer, so they should focus on adding open courses to their schedule. Our ’29s will have plenty of time to shift classes around after meeting with their Lower Division Advisor (LDA) and Student Advisor (SA) during New Deac Week. They will also be able to participate in the Add/Drop period following the start of classes.
Deep breaths, all. Things tend to work out :)
