In this Issue: today we share some thoughts on registration for our incoming ’29 students

Our incoming Class of 2029 began the process of registering for classes today. I have heard from a number of families during registration and wanted to share some advice and perspective from the Offices of the University Registrar and Academic Advising.

  • ‘29 students are not expected to have their entire class schedule settled today. If that happened for your ‘29, fantastic! But that is not typically the norm.
  • The registration period is open for 3 weeks (through August 10). Students in the Class of ‘29 should continue looking at Workday regularly/daily to see if there are seats that have become available now that were not before (for example, a student may have signed up for a class today and three days from now decides they don’t want that seat and drops the class). Departments are also monitoring demand for their classes and adjusting by adding seats and/or new sections.
  • Students must consider the full array of course meeting times and faculty in order to maximize their schedules.
  • After the 3 week registration period closes, ‘29 students will be unable to change their schedule UNTIL they meet with their Lower Division Advisor after move-in. Then they will be able to drop and add classes as availability allows and add themselves to waitlists where available. So know this is not a final schedule.
  • Courses that students do not get as part of their Fall schedule can be picked up in the Spring. High-demand introductory courses are offered both semesters.

Finally, I would ask families and students to trust the process. I know that registration can feel very stressful, but things have a way of working themselves out over time; I have seen this year after year (both for myself in my student days, and as an administrator for 26 years). Any credit bearing class a ‘29 student takes advances them towards their degree, even if it is not their first choice, or in their intended major, etc.

So if your ‘29 doesn’t feel like they have the right schedule for them yet – please tell them to work through some of the above suggestions, and ask for help if needed.
